Ok, I didn't want to write my thoughts about the registry,
{too much information}

OK, I really think you guys are over-thinking this. Dan is just proposing a simple public car registry on the web of which there are dozens. The info to be gathered will be typical of what most other car registries gather, such as this site that was referenced: http://www.bmwmregistry.com/registry.php

This is not rocket science and does not require too much fore thought other than when the registry is up and running you put up the VIN and other attributes of your car and maybe some history. Others can do a search and read about your car and enjoy.

chicane, if you think the whole registry is just a "click here, let's start, it's okay now", and all things i have wrote is not important, and Dan will be responsible if hackers upload chlid porn to the registry (Dan said he don't want any responsibility for anything !), then I think it is time to stop my activity about this register idea.

I do not want to speak for Dan, bu I'm sure if there is illicit content of ANY kind uploaded we will have a group of volunteer admins who will delete that nefarious info quickly. Dan doesn't do everything on this site now (Atlas helps out), and it is too much to ask one guy to take full responsibility for still another site.

There is nothing decided about this register, there is noone who said he will make it for sure, there are no admins, etc. But everyone know that someone will make it, right ? :)

But if Dan, atlas, or anyone will accept that he will be responisble for everything (like legal actions about the shared information, hacker attacks, complaints, critism from the board), then have fun ! :)

I'm sure "someone" has it covered Feri, relax. You have an e9 Forum to post to don't you?
First off, just a FYI, if memory serves under a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, people that host blogs or forums are not responsible for the content posted by others on that forum, the people who posted the content are responsible.

chicane, we are moving to offtopic, but anyway. If previously merdad (am i correrct) hasn't decide to leave, everyone would stay the roadfly. Same with this forum, it is operated a one man army (atlas or dan). People are ALWAYS waiting for someone.

People always see and always sure about that there are at least 1 person everywhere who will do everything for them for free, and that one person thought about everything.

As long as it will happen, people will be happy.

Anyway, back to the register topic.

As I see it it takes a forward thinking American, like Dan to act instead of waiting around for some sort of consensus. If you want to join that is fine, if not that's fine to. I think Dan has laid out his goals if you want to help that's great, if not, no biggie.

Wow, I'm having flashbacks of product design meetings in corporate life...

First off... I never said I was going to be completely hands off when it comes to administration of this registry. If you read through the posts you'll see that I said I wanted the "users" to input their own information and some admins would check it for abuse. THERE WILL NEVER BE ONLY ONE ADMIN FOR ANYTHING RELATED TO e9coupe.com.

Secondly... I WILL take responsibility for getting this registry project started, unless someone else feels the need to do it. Started means, getting something up and running so the forum "members" of e9coupe.com can give their input, tweaks can be made, processes can be discussed, user input ideas tossed around, etc, then the ideas that can be implemented get implemented.

What I had envisioned was very similar to the bmwmregistry. Simple, not too much data, easy (or looks easy anyway). This is why I'm suggesting getting something up and working and tweaking it. This isn't just MY choice.

I'll say it once more... you have all shown interest in a "new" registry for E9's. It is now being worked on and I will update the forum members when there is new information. Until then, please have faith that things are moving forward.

new site

Feri,

"We" did not leave Roadfly just because Merdad left. The issues that Merdad had with Roadfly were just some of a number of different issues many of us had. Since then, Merdad has not been an active member of this board although I hope that changes in the future. His posts were always productive and helpful. And the color of his coupe is my all time fav. That's his coupe just above the Tech Info link above.

With regard to the new registry, I agree with Chicane (did I just say that? :-D ). There really in no need to over think or over engineer this thing. Dan has always been very practical with his board set up and admin here and modeling a new E9 registry loosely around the existing M Registry is more than sufficient for our needs. We had nearly 150 entries on our old gallery and that was 3+ years ago. My sense is that most of the CS Registry users are here anyway and once our new registry starts to be populated, the word will spread to those who are not. Like this board membership, it will grow over time.

Simple/practical is good especially in things related to IT.

*********

Dan, it may be nice to have some sort of "connection" between the registry database and the board membership database (I have not come up with a good reason yet, but it may be nice to have). Should the registry just be an extension of it or at least have the new registry have a field for the user ID. May be too late now based upon what you have built...just thinking.

If you haven't read this thread here yet...How's this idea for our own Registry?

http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5313

Would appreciate some feedback...see how the 'tiles' can be used in many different ways?

Alright folks... I've read through this thread and here is what I propose.

We are already developing a bmw registry that we are planning to release at registry.bmwsharkfest.org. (It's not live yet, don't try to go there). :) We (and by we, I mean the Southeast Sharkfest folks) will host and monitor the system and will likely have one or two of you who are more closely tied in with the e9 community help with design. We are going to start the registry with CS's only but may expand to other non-M models.

We have the infrastructure and the Eugene, the crazy, can-do computer programmer can get it all done in short order. We have an almost unlimited amount of bandwidth and server space (not that you'd need much for this) for FREE. No adds, no banners - nada... and it's fast.

The information we will collect will be very similar to the M registry with a few differences. We will be tied into a - our registration system will use the same system as the Southeast Sharkfest website with some minor modifications. We will also likely be linked to a VIN database (so when you input the last 7 of your VIN, it fills out the other information automatically based on the database. The site will support picture uploads, and possibly video uploads as well as time goes on.

We will attempt to make the site as user friendly as possible and during the beta session (during which we will collect live data) we can also change the input/output formats to meet the needs and desires of the community; that is to say, we'll be all ears.

Everyone cool with this? I figure we can talk about this all we want, but what we really need to do is just DO it and then work out the little details as time goes on. No personally identifiable information will ever be released without specifically indicating you wish for that to be so.

We are debugging and will be live within 10 days.

Err....

Is there anyone in this thread who is NOT making any e9 registy ? :D

May I ask the rest of the 1000+ forum members to join the fun ? Call 1-800-E9-REGISTRY and make your register now ! With money back guarantee !

What is the price of the winner who can show the first working register ? :D

What is the price of the winner who can prove that his register is the official one? :D

What is the price of that winner who can estimate how many different e9 register will be ready at the end of THIS year ? :)

What is the price of that winner who can estimate how many different e9 register will be ready in the NEXT following years ?

What is the price of the winner who can show that this is the result of non-planned project (just leave it for xy, it will be okay!) ? :D

This is sooooo much fun ! :)

TodB: I hope that in this situation now you can understand my looooong post about the registry ideas.

LOL! I don't know, but ours will be free, fast, and consistantly monitored... Also we're willing to give it a substantial time commitment (If that means anything...) :)

I think they call this too many cooks in the kitchen. Which ever registry Dang anoints as the chosen one will be the official E9 registry everyone else working on a "registry" is just wasting their time, IMHO.

Holy crap, I agree with Chicane again.:-D

DanG is our man and has indicated he is building a registry for us. We will follow his lead.

No, but really. Help Dan with his efforts or give it a rest.

Ok, no problem, we'll drop it then. Definitely do NOT want to waste our time. Figured since we had the resources at our fingertips and the ability to get it rolling quick, free and with a good already-established interface that's not going anywhere, it would be a good option for you folks. I'll be around as I look for my e9... I look forward to registering it wherever is dubbed the official "one."
