Alpina alloys, tell me what I have bought

a chap local to me was advertising CSL Alpinas for sale, two sets. Finally got over to see them last night, one set of 10 hole rims, and one set of 5 hole rims. From reading various posts on this site (thanks team!) I understand 5 hole Alpinas would have been OE for my city pack CSL, so I bought them. From speaking to a PO, my car's original alloys were given away (!) in the 80s when the current 15" Rials were fitted.

So, tell me what I have bought!? Paint is pretty thick so the lettering is hard to read. On the front I see:

On the back the date stamp is 9/72 on two wheels, one is 8/72 and one is 7/72. Is it normal for mixed manufacture dates, or do I have a mixed set?

Condition is mixed, they're quite pitted and have obviously seen some action! But they have also been painted and then stored. They'll need a good refurb I think, particularly with the pitting near the tyre's bead I wonder if they'd hold pressure at present.

You have first generation Alpina's. I think set is mixed, but i also think it doesn't really matter.
Thick paint is probably because someone tried to hide pitted surface.

They look to be blasted and powder coated. The putting is from blasting the old metal, and the lack of detail on the lug area is due to the thickness of the powder. They are what they are, I wouldn’t blast them again.

Stuff up the center section and hit it with some duplicolor semigloss wheel paint. A few light coats will do it. Keep in mind that the black ring on Alpinas extends a tiny bit over the lip. Search around for pics.

I’ve done the duplicolor semigloss center on two sets of wheels. It looks very good and adheres well.

If wheels are powder coated - you can remove paint chemically (special powder coating remover) - it will not touch aluminium, so surface will be the same as was after previous owner blasting. coating.
Used it in mine BBS RS's that where black powder coated when i purchased them, worked perfect.

My opinion is that
These rims need some seriously professional TLC. The fact that they are for your Csl makes it all the more important since they are the correct rims and need to look the part, regardless of which car they go on.
These need chemical paint removal or special mild blasting so as not to damage the details and then all the corrections made to the surfaces before they are painted and not powder coated. They should look like when they were new.
To leave them like they are would do injustice to the rims and the Csl.

Hub caps are available thru Bmw or W/N (12-15€) each. Metal valves your tyre shop will install along with the tyres.
Lug nuts....... the correct ones like in the pic are available from BMW but expensive (+-6€ per piece) or the common version from W/N or eBay for way less. Tyres surely depends on the budget!

Stevehose has the perfect quality rims with correct lug nuts and wheel caps. Maybe he’d share a pic or two. That’s what they should look like.

Starchem Synstryp will remove powdercoating in minutes without damaging the metal under neath, not expensive either

I've "got" an alloy wheel chap I'll call tomorrow, see what he thinks he can do with them. Maybe beyond his scope though. But I agree with the above; what I'd like to do is strip existing paint, repair pitting, check for true, and re-paint. With the pitting, what is the process? Is new metal introduced, or is it done with a filler?

The lettering will be what it is, nothing to be done there.

So the valves are a standard metal valve then, not an Alpina special. Good!

Re lug nuts, I have one of these bought for a prior car, see photo. Is this correct? 3611 1 108 947


For hubcaps, would the logo have been BMW or Alpina?

The lugnut is correct. The Wheel caps all have Bmw emblems. Getting the right size (57mm) Alpina Alu emblems is close to impossible. 58mm yes, but the 1mm makes all the difference

Coupe King has high quality Alpina repro lugnuts, albeit a little pricey, but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

My alloy refurber has seen photos and reckons they'll be fine to strip, straighten and powder coat. Dropping them off next week.

The valves aren't supposed to screw into the wheel.
I used these ones for my Alpinas, BMW part# 36121119332 Not sure if they are the correct ones for Alpinas, maybe someone can chime in.

I bought them from this guy in Latvia, have since ordered several sets of valves and no problem with the seller.

As Gransin mentioned - no thread suppose to be on wheel.
Genuine old valves are the same as on Gransin photo - base with thread & rubber + metal washer & screw nut.

Valves arrived today from Latvia, so wheels go off for refurb on Monday.
Question re wheel centres, do E9 people generally go for bmw or alpina logos? I see W&N does bmw and coupeking does alpina, anyone else I should look at? I assume bmw dealer is not the place to go?

I'll buy lug nuts from CK anyway, not seen any better ones in Europe. Happy to help Trump with his trade deficit

Re tyre's, planning to fit Dunlop sport classic in 205/70/14 W. Camskill has them for £258 each, which is quite a lot of £!! Anyone know of a cheaper supplier? I've always found Camskill quite hard to beat but....
