On my 1970 CS...purchased new Bilsteins P36-0024 from Carl and the cartridge sits flush with the top of the strut housing leaving no room for the gland nut. My housing has the number 1386 R59 on it. I have searched for similar nos and have come up with nothing. Does this number give any OEM fitment information that I cant seem to find?

Yes, both sides are the same measurements so the new parts fit flush with no room for the nut. Trying to figure out what housings I have.

I just measured the depth of all my strut housings, the E3 early, E3 late, E12 and E24. They all measure about 16-7/8" deep.

Thanks Mike. I now know I don't have E9. Mine are 16 7/8 as well. I am guessing E12 but not sure how to definitively tell.

I had an e12 on mine, this is what it looked like:

mine on the blue coupe were deep enough for the Bilsteins , but i had a M48 gland thread and a M50 , so a mixed set of struts.

Are we suggesting here that the e3 struts have a different tube length?

Gary,

I don’t have a spare strut tube but I do have the struts that were inside. I can measure the length of the strut.

The strut, left front 31311110805, with 50mm gland nut, was used on the e9 until production ended and on the e3 through model year 1973. For MY 74 on the e3 the spindle changed as did the control arm and tension strut but still used the 50mm gland nut.

The e12 used a different strut than late e3 and had the 48mm gland nut.

Glad this plthread came about (at Gary’s expense sorry). I also didn’t know those nuts are called “gland nuts”. :D

What is tube ID? I have a set with 48.6mm ID, not sure if that equates to 48 or 50 gland nut. I don’t have a spare gland nut to try on it.

Mine are definitely E12 and measure 46.25mm. Test measured an E12 insert with the correct 48mm gland nut and everything fits as its supposed to. My nuts are the E12 style 48mm with the small hole for the shock shaft to come through. New inserts will come with the correct 48mm nuts. $154ea
