Not actually. I stick the big end of the stud thru the ¾” hole then I can swing the small end behind the axle flange & pull it into its hole. Then I greased the studs threads and used a nut to pull the stud into its hole. Nothing was tricky about this job except the ¾” hole in the sheet metal...
Maybe……. just possibly the 42 mm has something to do with the way the car drifts when it oversteers……. only a guess on my part. Sorry, I’m not going to be the guy to test that, better find Hans Stuck for that one but I will work on getting some photos posted in the next few days. ~ John...
Being a long time hot rodder I have always believed that “stance” (tire size and the way the tires fit the wheel openings) makes or breaks the look of a car. It’s always bugged me the track looks too narrow on the rear of our coupes compared to the front track so I finally got around to...
My coupe has a manual sunroof. In photo one you can see how the strip I welded in keeps the L bracket from moving in the direction of the arrow I marked on the retaining clip. The second photo shows what you will likely see if the L bracket has swung forward on your car because it’s pretty...
SUNROOF UPDATE, some good progress plus more questions
Well I finally found a pair of sunroof cables that work in our coupes. VW cables in eBay auction #282771027405 do work in my 72 coupe. Little Franky & myself installed them and opened & closed the sunroof dozens of times but the...
WHAT I’VE FOUND OUT……… so far.
#1 The 2002 guys have known about the Volvo sunroof cables for quite a while and have been buying them up.
#2 The left (driver’s) Volvo cable is available but good luck on finding a right (passenger’s) side. Same problem as BMW.
#3 There is an unverified...
Well I got the Porsche sunroof cables that are supposed to fit the 911 from 1965 thru 1996. They are OEM Porsche part numbers 964 564 143 00 and 964 564 144 00. As you can see in the photo they are different from my BMW one in the center. The attachment hardware at the ends is completely...
Last summer I got information from members on pulling out my sunroof so I ordered new drive cables and plastic guide pieces figuring I might as well replace them while I’ve got everything pulled apart. So far the dealer has been able to get me everything except one drive cable part...
Anyone have any recent sunroof experience ? I managed to unclip the sunroof headliner and slide it back. When my sunroof is closed it is tight and rattle free. However as soon as you move it back and the rear drops down the rear of the sunroof panel becomes loose (vertically) and makes noise...
I’ve only driven my coupe several times this year because I’ve been so annoyed by a rattle in the sunroof when it’s partially open. When it’s open several inches the front is mounted solidly but the rear of the sunroof panel can be moved up & down maybe a half inch or so with an accompanying...
Does anyone have the link for the U-tube video where Brian Redman is standing in front of the #25 Batmobile and talking about cutting the corner curbing and doing 10000 RPM in the car ? I’d appreciate a link so I could send it to a friend. Thank you ~ John Buchtenkirch
I guess I will have to machine up some Delran bushings to free mine up a bit or maybe small bearings. It’s fine when you drive it but it’s right in your face when you turn to get out of the car besides looking a bit goofy. More projects & more fun , all part of owning BMW’s last true...
Chris, I was just wondering  if the Bluedevils seat belts had a spring on the sash bracket to return them to the vertical position ? My coupe had VW belts and retractors installed by the previous owner. The belt also cut across my throat so I made a sash bracket out of 1/8” cold rolled...
I just love answer #4 <BIGEST GRIN> and answer #5 is just bizarre. Back in the day when I was a young pup in the auto body trade (early seventies) an old timer gave me some advice that has served me well thru the years. Whenever you’re trying to align a panel that opens always remove the latch...
Being a body man pretty much my entire working life I can certainly understand why an American convertible weights more than a sedan or even a hardtop, the convertible frame has an X member added to make up for torsional strength lost by lack of roof plus the hydraulic pumps and cylinders to...
Kind of hard to believe . Could the vent windows and the ridiculously heavy quarter window regulators really add that much more ? I’d guess the front seats are heavier too but it’s still hard to see where the difference is when considering the extra doors. ~ John Buchtenkirch
