Agree completely. It was a nightmare. New bushing definitely seem harder than the originals.
I also used boiling water, lube and had to cut a chamfer into the bushing eventually.
Only additional advice I have is order an extra bushing or two before hand so when you destroy one trying to...

I also had an aftermarket sunroof sadly cut into my e9 and was elated when I managed to find a complete roof in great condition.
That was a couple years ago, but I saw this red roof on kleinanzeigan recently which reminded me of it...
I’m actually just in the middle of rebuilding my steering column and did manage to find the correct bearings!
The part number is 32 31 1 150 054
Wallothnesch stocks them listed as e21 and e12 but it is the correct bearing for the e9.
They are pressed into the column and not too difficult to...

Something else interesting worth noting in this thread is the staggering weight difference between manual and power steering set ups. I measured a 13.8kg saving without fluids. Just for reference, that’s a better weight reduction than fitting an aluminium...
