    CSL Redo for Vintage Racing

BTW there are more photos of the Martini here, which may be useful: https://williamianson.com/car/martini-bmw-3-0-csl-batmobile-group-2-for-sale/

    CSL Redo for Vintage Racing

On the Martini CSL we followed FIA 1648. In the front are period AP CP2270 front calipers (see photo 2), 4 pistons, 41.3 mm piston dia. At the rear we used Ate “late” Porsche 911s calipers, 2 pistons, 48 mm piston dia.. The APs were used in the '70s on Formula 1 cars and you can sometimes...

    CSL at Fantasy Junction

Yannick is into Porsches now but has not forgotten anything... and as Jimmy says, Gerritt is a real gentleman and a wonderful resource as is Henric Anselm. Not sure if any of them are ever on this forum anymore but boy it's nice to see Jimmy back!

    CSL 2275 011 For Sale

You will not find a nicer or more straight up guy than Jimmy. I bought several of his cars and he is a gentleman through and through. (Jimmy, hope you're well and by the way the Martini is going back to Europe where it belongs- I hope someone there will buy it and race the socks off it, so to...

    Martini Group 2 CSL

Thanks. It was not running right and that made it even more of a handful than usual. Nothing like having the motor go flat mid corner (4 was especially problematic) and then come roaring back to life!

    Martini Group 2 CSL

Here's footage of all Saturday's races. Ours begins at 1:54 (a bit before halfway through).

    First racer for sale

You bet. BTW the price on the Alpina car is > $1M. Not unreasonable really if you consider that a Porsche RSR from the period with comparable history would be twice that.

    First racer for sale

It is as much a CSL as its contemporaries- a Group 2 CSL was defined strictly by whether it met the FIA 1648-71 homologation rules. The earliest ones, like this one, were based on 2800s (BTW this car belonged at one time to our dear Jimmy Baker, but he never brought it to the States). Some...

Interesting "individual" 3.0 CSL with BMW sunroof

Merry Christmas Henric, nice to hear from you again! So many interesting questions, as always... I am particularly curious about the aluminum vs. steel boot lid. I have a suspicion that the requirement for a steel part on Bats only came about with the later 3-legged wing, as there is no real...

    Strut bar - group buy??

I doubt they do anything for a street car either unless maybe you autocross it. But I will say Mark ('Daddywad') makes a very nice part. It is such a good replica of the Alpina part that we used one on the Martini car.

    CSL at the 'Ring

Right, it's the Martini CSL which just passed its FIA inspection this morning for a Historic Technical Passport. To celebrate, here's another period photo.

    CSL at the 'Ring

Terrific! Here's another CSL at the Ring, nearly 40 years ago.

    Martini Racing Group 2 Resurrection

Yep, those are Porsche calipers in the rear. Well, not specifically Porsche. The Ates were used on other cars as well (e.g. Alfa), and they were homologated for Group 2 on the CSL. The front calipers are considerably more rare, and they gave BuzzBomb headaches. But it's all working out. I...

    Martini Racing Group 2 Resurrection

Thanks, Jeff had pointed that out as well. But the car is being restored to 1979, the final year of Group 2 homologation for CSLs. So we have a bit of flexibility there (as a side note the Group 2 rules changed several times over the years so it takes a careful reading of FIA 1648, the CSL...

    Martini Racing Group 2 Resurrection

This is an M30 in late Group 2 trim (known as an M52/2). 3.3 liter, 2 valve. Good for 340 HP in period, and that is exactly what this one made. I'm sure you could squeeze lots more out of an S38. My philosophy on historic cars and vintage racing is that the cars should be as true to the way...

    Martini Racing Group 2 Resurrection

Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it shouldn't be correct... the flywheel and clutch are period parts, and they were REALLY hard to find (as with a lot of the other parts). Gerrit Blankman turned these up. He also provided those lovely original sand-formed Alpina headers and lots of...

    Martini Racing Group 2 Resurrection

The suspension and brakes are being put together by Jeff Ireland. Without Jeff's talent, generosity, and hard work there's no way we'd make Monterey! I kept forgetting my phone when I was over there so I don't have pictures at the moment but the suspension is fairly standard- Alpina Bilstein...

    Martini Racing Group 2 Resurrection

Here's a look inside the trunk. The big aluminum auxiliary tank replicates the original but is really a sham, it hides a modern fuel cell. The fab work was done by John Buddenbaum. The lid stick is Ron's 4 iron which I don't think he'll be needing for the next few weeks...

    Martini Racing Group 2 Resurrection

BTW just about everything on this motor (and the whole car for that matter) is period original. The block, the head, the crankshaft, the cam, the headers, the Alpina slide throttle and oil pump, the injection pump... all Group 2 parts from the '70s.
