hello i am about to get a 1974 3.0 cl in good shape
it's an almost finished project and i was hinking of turning it into
an homage to the first BMW art car by alexander calder.
if i would do that, i would have an complete interior available.
my question is how much would it be worth?

i am on the fence of painting the car and leave it at that or make it
something very special
opinions would be greatly appreciated
thank you

1. Make something very special
the are 13-16 Million new cars per year here, mass production doesn't make anything special, go make yours special

2. A complete interior is valuable

3. Put the VIN number and color pre-art in the registry

interior

I sold my interior out of a 2800cs which was very nice for $1500 to a couple of people who needed different things although the shipping and storing and questions will get old quick!
I ended up trading for the csl lexan rear and quarter windows which was a good trade for both parties.

That sounds like a cool project!Where are you located? I know ireland engineering has just made the grp 4? flares for that wide look sould look cool rolling down the freeway.

a little update

like i said , i want to paint the car in the colors of the original "bmw art car' by alexander calder.
its going to be a huge project as i need to get some wide body fenders as well...
or i just leave the car alone and just make her nice...
out of curiousity, how much would the car be worth the way she is?

You seen very concerned with the values & costs of this project. Unfortunately, no one can give you very precise numbers just from looking at photos on the Internet.

I can tell you that your car will require fairly extensive, and as such, fairly expensive metal work - the two photos above show rust at the fender to fenderwell seam - a common issue on e9's. While I can't see the metal underneath the sound deadening, I am going to guess that the front spring supports just inboard of that seam will also need attention. If someone represented this to you as an "almost finished project", they were dreaming.

So, when you wrote "just leave the car alone and just make her nice", I hope you understand that you will have to invest some major bucks to achieve that, even if you forget the fender flares and Calder paint job.

Then you asked: "how much would the car be worth the way she is?". Well sadly, not a lot. Again, no one can give you a precise budget for rust repair and paint without seeing the car - preferrably stripped. But my guess is that it would be worth more as individual parts than as a whole.

jay thank you for your awesome response.
yes , the car was presented to me as , just 'needing paint'
but i don't know , if the previous owner knows much about the current
condition , as the car sat in this state for about 20 years.
i just finished one 'art car project'
i post a few photo's if interested

Art Cars

There is a picture of Janis Joplin's Porsche in the Rollingstone, special hall of fame edition
Interesting. Not to say that LSD would be necessary for inspiration...

don't know how much drugs have to be involved for inspiration.
anyway, the first BMW art car was painted by alexander calder

and the second car was created by frank stella...
both cars were 3.0csl and frank stella's car is in an exhibit in grand central station, right now.
