I think some of what we see in trunk is foam and adhesive under the plastic liners, surface rust is pretty common here, especially between the wheel wells behind the rear bulkhead.

Agree completely. The adhesive is pretty orange/rust color (maybe from age). I had a '72 csi and I removed the broken elephant skin from the fender wells. That area looked very similar to this car but it was solid as could be.

It also has a lot to do with good photography. Hard to tell from the pics but that could even include not showing the instrument cluster wood might not match the rest of the interior wood.
