I have a 74 E9 that has the L-Jet fuel injection from a 76 E3. It runs well but I have had my eye out for a 3.5 to upgrade to. I have the opportunity to get one from an 89 535. It was a 5 speed but the tranny has been taken already. Is this a good year motor to use for the E9? I would like to find a 5 speed as well.

I've been searching here for something like a list of things to consider and parts needed to do these conversions but I haven't found a succinct list. Is there a particular thread or article that would be good for this purpose?

My E9 needs a fair amount of cosmetic work including replacing the floors and other rust repairs. It is a multi-year project for sure, I've had it for 10 years now. I will have the perfectly good 3.0 (doesn't leak, smoke or overheat) available if someone wants it. Maybe trade for what I need. I'd like to end up with the 3.5, a 5 speed and rear end change if needed. I'm in Northern CA.

Thanks! John

John, more searching is in order but I THINK I've read that an '89 will have a different motor mount configuration. The five speed from that era will not have a connection for a mechanical speedometer. The engine can still be fitted, all it takes is some money and a welded steel adaptor. CNPR in La Jolla California supposedly sells such, others may too, but if you access a competent welder it could be DIY.

If you wish to go down this path, I have a 3.5L from a low mileage (66k) '85 635csi with a consistent 170psi compression across all cylinders (I have video of taking the compression test). It is complete with harness, motronic control box and accessories on the motor. PM me if interested.

The 1985 engine is 182 hp
The motronic is simple Motronic
8:1 compression

The 1989 engine is 208 hp
Motronic 1.3 adaptive
9:1 compression
Euro K cam

That 89 you have just needs a engine motor mount adapter.

Interesting... I think dealing with the mount issue would be worth going with the 89 engine.

Wise9uy, thanks for the offer, but I think the later motor is the way to go.

Honolulu and SFDon, appreciate the input. Don, do you have a shop in the Bay Area?

Thanks all
