what i have from the bosch website a few months ago - group 47 is correct ... but there were several numbers listed depending if you were getting an S4 or an S5 model

s4 - s44527b - 300cca
s5 premium - s5589b - 650cca / s5531b - 600cca / s5586b - 480cca

if i remember correctly - deQ has the s4 model in his coupe

wait, wait, wait !

you remember well scott but there is a trick

i do have a S4, the most powerful possible, but it does not fit in the stock tray, to do so you must cut the plastic toe on one of the short sides
let me explain, the battery has a toe that extends the size of the battery only in the lower part, that toe is not part of the battery it is an external thing, so you can cut it
be advised and happy drving

Is the toe originally for the metal piece that clamped over the toe? The metal piece had a metal threaded rod. Or something like that. It has been a long time since I had an original battery hold down in my car.

i have done a little more research on battery group sizes that should work with the coupe along with Bosch model numbers in the S4 and S5 model ranges.

S5 group 47 - s5531b (9.7"L x 6.9"w x 7.5"h) = 600 cca
the S5 group 34R may fit - s5522b (10.2"L x 6.8"w x 8"h) = 770 cca

S4 group 90 - s4568b (9.5"L x 6.9"w x 6.9"h) = 520 cca
S4 group 96R - s4574b (9.6"L x 6.2"w x 6.9"h) = 590 cca

in looking on line for the model numbers didn't turn up any sources. Pep Boys does list Bosch Batteries, but not by the Bosch S4 or S5 product lines ... they list only as Premium Power models
the group 96r (96r-590) is $129 -
the group 47 (47-600b) is $162 -

one more thing, the USA versions of the batteries aren't as pretty as the S4 battery in deQ's coupe. they are all black with a silver label

R generally means a reversed terminal and if so wouldn't work.
actually in the case of 34 + 34r, the 34 has a left side positive, and the 34r has a right side positive. the e30 m3 used a 34r. all of the batteries group sizes that i have listed below are right side positive.

I am looking at getting a new battery for my 1972 3.0CS.
I was excited to find the Bosch S3514B Group Size 26R (L 8.740 x W 6.732 x H 7.992) at SummitRacing.com for $65.97. Unfortunately it CANNOT be shipped and must be picked up at one of their four locations (Tallmadge, OH; Sparks, NV; McDonough, GA; Arlington, TX)!

OPTICAT(https://www.opticatonline.com/part/bosch-s3514b-vehicle-battery) states that it fits the following cars:
  • 2800CS: 1968 - 1971
  • 3.0CS: 1971 - 1974
  • 3.0CSL: 1971
  • 3.0CSi: 1971 - 1974

I just noticed Chris Macha's post about "R" and Reversed Terminal (Positive Terminal Location on Top Right) not working.

So does that mean that the 26R won't work??

Chris- what about the 804?

From your post-

For those who want a BMW battery for appearance I found one at the dealer that fits perfectly. Part number 61-21-2-353-804, list $208, for some reason it isn't showing up in RealOEM though. Black top, white sides, 61 Ah, these are no longer made by Exide which were all white.

I know, you don't have to spend that much money, you can find an Interstate for less but it just looks right. Here it is sitting in the 2800 which uses the same battery.

R generally means a reversed terminal and if so wouldn't work.

So the 26R with the positive terminal on the right side is correct and will work with the dimensions given
