Anyone recognize this car? I see it has a Petri wheel, not an Alpina. Also the rear trunk lid has a vinyl CSL decal instead of a chrome CS or CSL badge.

The claim that this car is the first car of the M-GmbH and at the same time the first CSL is hard to maintain for the first CSLs were produced at a time when the BMW Motorsport GmbH did not even exist. The first action of BMW Motorsport under the direction of Jochen Neerpasch in the CSL program was the introduction of the injected CSL as described in the book of Hanns-Peter Rosellen.

The first injected CSL is “de facto” the first production M car.

Agree, the first 169 we're effectively proof of concept cars... with a little help from Alpina?

BMW would certainly have built 1000 Carburetted CSLs if they could have sold them. The introduction of the Csi in 1971 put a serious brake on the sale of CSLs. The CSi was less expensive for a higher top speed and offered a lot more comfort. Besides, a modern injected engine was also perceived as the thing to have in those days.
