Differential drive shaft sealing rings

Well after a long hiatus it's time to continue restoring my dad's '74 3.0CS!

I am trying to replace the drive shaft sealing rings found on either side of the differential. Section 33 11 691 of the repair manual simply says "take out shaft sealing ring" but it's on there pretty tight and I don't want to break anything. I must be missing something, anyone have any ideas?

Any advice greatly appreciated thank you!

Why not do the front seal as well. If the sides leak, the front may not be too far behind. Also if you plan on synthetic diff oil like Redline, front my leak even if it does not now. I found the job easier just removing the entire diff and working on a benchtop.
