Hi Guys, This is a big ask and a real pain for whoever may be able to help me out, but I am stuck with a freight problem.

Last year I ordered some new parts through Penske as they are way way cheaper than the local stealer down here can supply them to me for, these were the 2 x long stainless steel sill/rocker mouldings under the doors and also a new stainless trim for inside the car (one that screws down over the carpet on top of the sill just next to the seat adjuster.

These have arrived at Penske (Rhode Island?) from Germany, but they now tell me that they are unable to ship these internationally to me here in NZ due I guess to there length, they tell me they can only Fed Ex these within the US.

My question is, is there anyone who knows a way I can get these down here to NZ? or dare I ask able to receive these from Penske for me and then forward them on somehow?

I am happy to bribe anyone with freight forwarding help with a couple of nice bottles of NZ wine :)

Any and all help greatly appreciated

Steve

If you don't find a better scenario I am happy to receive and forward to you no problem, how do you see shipping them from US to NZ if Penske can't do it, or is it that they won't?

That's the million dollar question Steve, I don't know how to get them from the US to NZ, I was hoping someone could help on that score?

And I'm not sure if its a "cant or wont" situation??

the best way to ship these is either in a long cardboard tube (heavy tube), or a 4" pvc tube with pvc end caps. a cardboard box is too long + skinny and therefore not stable enough. but whatever you use needs to be 1 piece for the tube

The angle I can explore is people flying the SFO to NZ route. A friend is organizing a tech conference in NZ for February and has people flying in from here. Is this something you can check in as luggage to an airliner?

Hi Arde,

Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it, but I wouldn't really feel comfortable asking strangers (non car people) to lug these things 1/2 way around the world for me, the package will be quite long, (about 2 meters x 3-4 inches diameter) so will require a bit of time and management, the last thing I would want to put people through when traveling to a strange country.
I don't mean to be unappreciative, but I just think it would be too much to ask.

Thanks anyway

There must be an easy way to do this with a freight company surely?

Companies like DHL etc do have size limits. You could try approaching an airline directly and ask for their freight department. Rules may be different there, for example you can bring skis on an airplane and they can be over 2m.

I wanted to ship some springs to Spain in 2013 to deQuincey and was shocked when I checked some rates.
I have a FedEx account and called them asking for alternatives.

FedEx has a service they call Great Rates for Int shipping. It will only go out on a Monday. These rates are half of normal rates. Not sure about package size though.
They use this to help fill planes and I guess Mondays are not up to capacity.

Not sure Penske would be willing to do this?

Update

I have a line on an NZ company that do consolidated freight, they have an address in LA where the US company's can ship to and then they consolidate and send down to NZ, believe it or not, even NZ post has this service as well, but only up to max of 1.5 meters long.
Such is the tyranny of distance from the rest of the world!

FYI, it is worth the hassle some times because of the price of parts through the dealers here

Penske was $103us each for the lower sill mouldings, NZ dealer $398nz each
inner stainless trim was $289us, NZ dealer $953nz
even with dollar conversion (which is creeping very close to the US now) and freight I am still much better of sourcing these from the US

will let you know how I get on

Thanks for ideas and suggestions

Steve, would be good to know how things pan out .We too here in Oz have similar issues in getting parts shipped from US suppliers such as Penske et al ....seems odd as there is surely a huge untapped market for them .Also,i would think that the exchange rate against the Euro must also be a killer for you if you have to buy out of Europe so i can understand your persistance .Alternatively, offering some bottles of Aussie Margaret River wine may be the deal clincher ! Good luck
Cheers,Simon

Seems to me you have a dealer problem. In the US if you are a member of the BMW Car Club of America most dealers will give you a 15% discount. It's not hard to get more than that. Up to 25%.
Looks like your dealers are ripping people off.
Maybe find a good BMW parts department and give the manager a few bottles of your good wine.

Hi Simon,

To be fair, I have had nothing but exceptional service from Penske parts, the lady (Lisa) I deal with up there is incredibly helpful, a few parcels ago, one got lost and they replaced it no questions asked.

It really is only a freight company issue I'm having due the length of these parts, the consolidated freight thing will be the way I will have to go, I have done this once in the past when I ordered all my belt line trim and windscreen mouldings, the only bummer to this is having to wait the 4-6 weeks it takes due to sea shipping.

I was thinking central Otago or Marlborough district for the wine :)

Will let you know the out come

fwiw...the USPS might work. tubes are generally more $ than boxes, but as mentioned stronger. is it really 2 meters long? People ship hockey sticks and skis by mail.

Steve,

Try a company called Shipito.com, I use them to ship out of the US when I need parts sent and the seller doesn't ship. Never had a problem and they even offer a 'purchase on your behalf' service if the seller wants a US card and address .

Cheers

John

Please look on the United States Postal Service Website (USPS.gov?) and see what their max dimensions are. They are by far and away the cheapest option for shipping from the US. I have mailed parts down to Australia, etc.

A freight consolidator from SFO or LA or Atlanta is also a good idea. I have dealth with Schnker, from Europe, not sure if they go to NZ.

Scott

Looks like they can do international shipping for packages up to 79 inches in total dimension. So it could be 72 by 3 by 4 inches, which might work for you.

Call a US post office to see what the other options are for long packages.

My local Post office telephone in Florida is 239-472-9300.

Thanks guys for all your help here.
I have found a NZ company (Mainfreight) that has a specific car and car part consolidated freight shipping service out of LA to NZ and will probably run with them.
I am just waiting for Penske to get back to me as I have asked them to do some really good packaging on these so they don't get bent on on there way, at this stage it seems to have thrown them a bit asking for something a little bit out of the ordinary, however I am sure they will come through in the end.
