Can someone clear up my confusion... regarding the console which houses/surrounds the gearlever...is there a difference in the A/C car to the non A/c car... I know the side consoles are different (that hold the A/C faceplate) but the actual square shaped console which houses the switches for the windows... they appear the same in pictures , but are they exactly the same ?

This was in my AC car. Is this an AC or non AC version? I can tell you that it didn't seem to fit particuarly well. It is also made of foam, which makes me wonder if it was a replacement. It certainly isn't new...

Mark, this is a non-AC version. the AC version has a short front leg. mine are made out of wood, but they could have made it from composite in later cars.
 
Found a pic of an AC version, courtesy of floridabmx. I can see now that the front lip is significantly shorter.

The longer "tongue" can be cut to fit, but it is a delicate job peeling back the vinyl without upsetting the old glue joints or pulling apart the plywood used to make the console.
 
The vinyl is probably attached via an adhesive. 3M makes a great adhesive remover/solvent. It takes a few minutes to let it soak, and probably more applications of the solvent as you slowly pull back the vinyl.

Never done it on this specific item, but have done it on quite a few other 20-30+ year old automotive interior parts.
