This kind of info is always appreciated. It takes a lot more time to document it but it will be used for years...

Guys please chime in at any time for suggestion, ideas or question, ( if I can answer :(:().
I have done many 02 rebuilds in my life but this is my first E9,
I will explain a section then post pics, I had a couple of hours yesterday so,
1- Took the exhaust system off completely it was easier and I had a lift to use ( left the back Exhaust manifold on the head to grab when taking the head off)
2- Drain the antifreeze
3- Disconnect the battery
4- Rotate the engine to achieve TDC with the rotor pointing at number one cylinder and the notch on distributor lip, the timing marks on the crank shaft pulley and front engine cover should match as well ( Remove the lower radiator hose from the thermostat side to see the crank shaft pulley marks)
5- Loosen the distributor bolt and remove the distributor along with the distributor plug wires
6- Take the thermostat cover off, 4 size 10 MM bolts
7- Take the valve cover off, 8X10mm nuts and 1x 10mm bolt

Along with 1986 head I suggest triple coring the radiator. It will keep everything running cool at 4 o'clock on the temperature gauge. Even at 105°F at 95-100mph across Nevada in August.

Pull the plugs and rotate the engine clockwise until the cams of cylinder #1 are pointed towards the block (remember it is tilted so the cams won't be pointing to directly at the ground). This will be TDC, verify by seeing that the harmonic balancer mark lines up with the lower timing cover notch. The cam gear will have this threaded screw pointing to the notch of the head as seen in this pic:

And the TDC ball will be in the timing window:

The timing mark and where the cam gear notch set in place thanks to Steve we can proceed.
I took the carburators off from the head side so I do not replace the carburators gaskets to the Intake manifold.
2 bolts on the top and two on the bottom size 13 mm.
