Is it possible to reuse a headliner? Can you get it to fit? Get the glue off?
I just had a headliner installed but the guy used too thick of foam, does not look good

What headliner material would you recommend?
I have one vote for SMS and Spalding
Both of these seem too thick

Thanks

When I had my coupe painted I found a used headliner in very good condition in the Netherlands, when it was installed it was painted in place and still looks great. I had also found a used dash top from the same seller. As he told me, our cars may rust more than yours but our interiors survive better.

Thanks Chris, it seems like it would be a problem getting the glue of and not having material to grab to stretch it? And getting the glue off? My new install doesn't look good, but if I start messing with it I will be committed to redoing it in some way

My upholster thinks that the extra weight of the thicker vinyl would cause it to pull away over time
Do you have the SMS installed? for how long?

My installer sprayed a "pre-glue" on a Friday and installed on a Monday as he too expressed some concern about the weight of the material . Once done , myself and a friend dealt with the "issues" of fitting the pinchweld . As Allan indicated, there will be some additional trimming and fettlling involved.

It is possible to reuse the headliner IF you can remove it without tearing it. There is a product I use called Tar And Glue Remover it is available from car valeter suppliers. As per its name it softens and removes tar and glue without damaging paintwork. Use it to soften the glue enough to peel the headliner away from the car and then you can remove all traces of glue before refitting. A word of caution regarding spray adhesive from a rattle can to glue vinyl. DON'T.
It will glue down but over time chemicals in the vinyl soften the glue and it will come unstuck. I speak from experience....trust me.

I am the guy who had SMS make the first headliner material in the correct pattern--for a CSL in black. I have had the headliner installed for three years. No issues. Installed by Vintage Sports and restoration in New Hampshire. My original CSL headliner was too far gone to re use, but I cut a piece out of it and mailed it to SMS to use as a pattern.

Hi Crater, Alan...
A little more to the story, I have material from SMS, it was torture getting it from them
I also had a piece from Alan that is original BMW
I had a guy install the BMW material but is screwed it up
The SMS is thick but the BMW seems even thicker
The material that was in my car was very thin, just the way it was installed, the glue etc. makes it seem like it might be original, but the pattern is similar but different

Has anyone here installed the headliner themselves?
What type of glue should I use?

I installed my own headliner, I used a contact adhesive called Evostick but I don't suppose what it's called really. Use contact adhesive. ;-)

Hi Crater,
The cars without a sunroof have 'bows', with a sunroof, there is a fiberboard that covers most of the ceiling and the liner is glued to that

Hi Mark, I just finished installing a headliner in a 1974 sunroof coupe. Actually quite easy. Ask SF Don for the material and send me a PM if you need help. Again, it's easy but you will need patience, and a bit of trim has to come off the car.

My '67 is currently at the upholstery shop and they will be installing the headliner. My car came with the fiberboard panel in the roof. When the POs redid the car in the '80s they applied a foam layer between the fiberboard and the headliner material. Is this correct, or should the material be glued directly to the the fiberboard?

Thanks for any advice.

I bought headliner material from Walloth & Nesch and then second-guessed and bought material from World Upholstery when they told me their pattern is more correct for the early Coupes.... any opinions?
