Does anyone know the weight of the hood? Am thinking about installing torsion support struts to work around my dead factory installed part.

According to realoem.com the weight is 21.450kg.
You'll have to do some tricky math or some tests with the hood mounted to determine what portion of the total weight needs to be held up with the struts. I think it will also matter where you mount the struts on both the hood and the inner fender(s). Hopefully someone has done this before so you don't have to start from scratch.
I was going to go this route, had some struts from my E24 that worked fine but I decided to risk my life and deal with that meta-stable torsion bar. I think the torsion bar somehow fits the theme/age of the car better.
