My son was planning to drive the coupe to work, so I found my spare key and left it behind for him to use.

The spare is a set of three keys, the normal black plastic Pebra, a silver Pebra, and a mystery key. I always thought the black and silver Pebra were identical but in looking at the dimples they were different, it turns out the silver is a valet key that does not open the trunk or glove box. I did not know we have valet keys for coupes.

The mystery key is made in Italy and obviously is not for any part of the coupe.

Here is the picture in case anybody can shed some light on the third key. Perhaps a key to the mistress apartment the first owner maintained?

Gas cap? Old car cover lock from the 80's? "The Club" steering wheel lock from the 90's? Mine had all 3 when I got it.

The valet key has always been a feature but often lost.

The center/top key looks like the locking gas cap key used on 2002s. I don't know if they were ever offered on e9s, but the 2002 version had a roundel imprinted on the gas cap. FWIW

How old is your son?Mine wanted to drive my the other day (23yrs old) and I haven't turned the keys over yet.

My son is more responsible and judicious than me, so I have always let him drive the coupe.
He is also better looking than me, the image of him driving away in the coupe is more elegant than the best CSL brochure.

Now tell me about your son before I can give advice.
 
Better looking than me,just gradulated college,just moved back home(Obama's World) but working for us in the Printing Business in Sales.I purchased a 73 tii some 20 years ago and told my wife that would be their 1st car but after restoring the car,I wouldn't let them drive it remembering how I drove my 1st car then traded that for my e9.

Give him the keys. It is not about passing cars intact, it is about passing memories to them.

Sales requires making an impression (so does printing I guess), imagine the impression he makes going to a power sales lunch in the coupe, where the colors of the Moet Chandon he holds and Rolex Daytona he wears combine in his left hand.

BTW, with Bernanke the "printing business" is booming so you can't complain.
 
I taught both my kids to drive a stick in mine but no solo missions yet. They're away at college now.
 
OK,Arde I'll give him a chance but he'll have to borrow his Grandfather's Rolex because I don't own one.And far as Bernanke,he should of shut down the presses before they printed 30,000,000.00 in 100.00 bills that they have to destroy!Our Government at work with our money.
 
OK now you are pushing your luck. He brought a Rolex in St Marten from this Jewelry Shop in a back Allen and the second hand moves like a Rolex but is it really is a Rolex?And of coarse this is his 1st Grandson and he would give all of his Bernanke Chinese 100.00 bills to him so now do I just him?
PS Leaving tomorrow on a 2 week Voyage with my Father-in-law to Europe. Is there any places you know there that I can pickup a 1967 Daytona cheap for him?
 
If it cost less than 100 bucks the Rolex is Russian. Get some dough from your father-in-law and when you are back my friend Eddy in San Francisco will get you a certified Daytona. Tell him a Rolex holds value better than the dollar bills and does not rust like a coupe. Have a great trip!
 
My 40 year-old son takes my CSL out for a spin occasionally. He is very responsible, but I tell him it is his inheritance he is driving anyway. I tease him sometimes that I'm considering selling it. He responds: "You can't do that! It is Lauren's (my 8 year-old granddaughter) college fund!" {:>) He knows I won't sell it, and I know he will never willingly sell it after I'm gone.
