SOLD: I just pulled a nice LS spool from a 1972 side loader. The case is marked "S - 40 - 11" (it was a 3.64) on the side and there is a "72" on top which I assume is 1972. This unit takes a ring with eight bolts so please keep that in mind as ring and pinion options are narrower for the 8-hole. I did slide a 188MM 3.15 E36 ring on for reference and it fit except for the bolt pattern.
I got the cap screws out without any issues and found all internal components in excellent condition as far as I can see. I have not measured the thickness of the friction discs, but they look very nice compared to what I have seen over the years. The spiders look excellent with no wear/galling. Quite a few pics were taken as I carefully looked through the components, but I will post just a few here for now. I am seeing 188MM spools trend at $475 from later medium sized differentials so that would be my price at this point, or I'm willing to field some offers if there is interest. A minor concern is that one will find some damage around the edge of the barrel next to the ring bolts - looks as though a bolt backed out and did some minor damage at some point. - nothing that would affect performance of the part (see last pic below). Also, please note that the light surface rust seen on the bearing and end cap is a result of the side cover being off during storage - internals look sweet. The 3.64 R/P set is available, but needs closer inspection at the moment. Cheers

Update of pic #5 and price ($475 OBO) per rules. A member brought up the fact that pic #5 of the top pressure plate looked a little vague so here is a pic after a little 45 second 1,000 grit polish. There is super light pitting, but nothing that will grab a fingernail. More pics available if there is interest here.
