Hi, I’ve bought a 3.0CS that was originally automatic. It now has a manual 5-speed along with an engine that doesn’t match the chassis number.

The engine number is 2855248.

Can anyone advise the history of this engine please?

Cheers

Might be an engine from a South African E3. BMW ZA used numbers in that range. Do you know anything about the history of your E9? Out of personal interest: Would you mind taking pictures of the block, its cast numbers, and the engine number? Would be great, either here or as PM. Thanks a lot.

Hi, it’s a SA vehicle so very likely. I haven’t got a photo of the stamp - it’s on the registration. Attached a photo of the engine but may not help much…

You need the info from the exhaust side of the block to set the year, a boroscope to see the pistons and a pic from the intake showing engine size markings, white letters and water jackets.

Right. If you want to do it correctly, this is the way. Maybe we can start a little easier. The engine number and maybe additional information are stamped on the bridge over the starter motor. Fairly easy to access on the E9, much harder on the E3. @sfdon has posted a guide somewhere here. If my assumption is right and your engine retains its original block, both unsure, your car will have a 3 litre engine, carburetted from new, built in 1976.

This means the block will not have the size cast in as in <6603F3D9-DFBD-4565-8E8A-5EF2F09272BE.jpeg> but probably stamped near the engine number. It should have the six pockets on either side for the large crankshaft, some of them visible in the same picture.

Of course, the numbers would give only the original setup, not the present one. But it's some kind of start.

Information about the South African E3 CKD is scarce, this includes the BMW Group Archiv in Munich. I spoke to a gentleman there; they will address it when they have time but they are always overworked.

Sorry for the very delayed reply - I haven’t been in the site for a while. Here’s a pic of the bridge above the starter - shows the same numbers as I mentioned earlier - 2855248
