Hi there

This should be as straightforward as it seems. However I'm having a space issue with my new Sanden 508 and Layne's AC mount. It seems I may need to modify the lower radiator mount. Or...preferably what am I doing wrong? I need about a 1/2" more room to fit this combo OR mod/remove the lower rad mount. I included a few snaps to show the issue.

THX again for any info and guidance.

Regards,
Bill

I thought the e3 rad mount would be like e9 but apparently it isn’t. Do you need the outer pulley of the Sanden to be driven from the crank or from the inner? Looks like your bracket has been bent upwards? If so it doesn’t look like the rad would even fit.

Thanks, Don, for confirming what the problem is and providing reference pics! It does look like the car did have a very slight impact in that area and was fix on the surface. I think I can either (gently) push out the lower valence or modify the rad mount a lil. I will also look into removing that rad support (top 2 and bottom left may be adequate).

There is lots of room for the rad too.

Regards,
Bill

Hi there,

Update

Its probably sacrilegious...I had to cut back the lower right radiator support. I could not move out the lower mount and surrounding body at all; I tried using a lil bottle jack and a few blocks but the lower valences' edge was the only area that moved. I glued the rubber mount in place with some marine adhesive and I believe, since the rad is supported in the other 3 corners and is rigid, there's is no way it will move to contact the pulley of the AC pump. I now have 1/2" clearance. If needed I could tack in a support but I believe it'll be fine.

THX again!

Don’s pic shows using the outer Sanden pulley but yours will be using the inner pulley? Seems strange unless it is the angle of the photo.

He is missing his third pulley. His AC belt is on the power steering pulley?

Busy day today.... airports are jammed again.
Chris- you are right, I didn’t notice the double water pump pulley on Bill‘s car.
All our AC jobs get upgraded cooling so I’m stuck on recognizing what our deal looks like.

Hi HB Chris,

Thanks for checking in!

I put a ruler on the face of the outer crankcase pulley (used for original AC pump) and it aligns nicely to the inner pulley on the Sanden pump.

Following Dick's recent post, that folllows and leaves this v-belt configuration. (Ignore the ? mark)

I’m surprised it’s on the inner pulley even though everything you have done seems to make sense.

Hi Chris
I'm swapping in a B35 and its water pump only has one pulley. Since I want to use a current viscous clutch and fan on the conversion (spin on 32 mm nut fan), and as the original configuration has the PSP driven by the water pump (red belt) and the water pump is driven by the crank (green belt), it looks like I need to modify the original water pump pulley (2 pulleys) to keep the original v belt configuration. The PSP sits out a bit closer to the rad support to align its pulley with the water pump pulley.

I included a few pics of the original water pump pulley an the water pump pulley off the B35 below.

Thanks for any insight!

Regards,
Bill

Pencil marks to modify original to use on a B35 water pump (asymmetric bolt pattern and ~32 mm hole for spin on fan and viscous clutch)

On my b35 I kept the lower PS pump to crank belt and used the single pulley for alternator and the same spin on water pump and viscous clutch, which as you found out has an asymmetric bolt pattern. Great work!

Hi there
On your B35 did you use the B35s crank pulleys or the original? This may be the crux. As I like the look of the original crank pulleys however they may not work with a current B35 water pump and it’s single pulley. So a solution may be to modify the original water pump pulleys for use on the current B35 water pump.

Thx
Bill

Hi Chris
THX. I will install the B35 crank pulleys and see. It may be time for compromise first vs. modifying and getting a unbalanced pulley and then going to all B35.

Regards
Bill

Yup. B35's water pump pulley and crank pulleys line up with the E3 PSP and the Sanden AC pump with LCW's bracket. The belts go like: 1st position is crank-water pump-alternator, 2nd is crank-PSP, 3rd is crank-AC pump.

Thanks Chris for the direction to use all B35 pulleys.

Regards
