I have a line on new Mahle European 10:1 Compression pistons, will know more by tomorrow or latest Friday I hope? I would like to do a group buy for those of you doing 3.5 clean to dirty swap or are planning one. These are the correct piano top style pistons and will not work in a later 1988 and up motors as most of you may know already...

They fit all 3.5 blocks 85-87 535i, 82-87 633 csi, 1985-1986 735 i and more m30 blocks if your willing to bore your 3.2 blocks possibly check with your machinist.

92mm std bore, or 92.25 or 92.50 oversize for 3430cc give or take few cc's if your going oversize?

Compression height 39.85mm

top ring 1.5mm
middle 2.0mm
oil 3.5mm

There are no NOS rings anymore, however think those can be found rather readily check with Total seal see what they have.

I had 10:1s made for my M90 engine by J&E. Ran about $750 including pins and rings and were made to fit the clean up bore size.

JE vs. Weisco vs. Mahle vs. Kolbenschmidt vs. Ross vs. Venolia

I spoke with parts guy Thursday, he said that there is a 92.05 ???? They were working to find the 3 other common sizes. Last set of pistons I had made were made by JE, prior to that Venolia of which I will never use them again. The JE pistons were correct in every aspect, and I don't want to get into specifics with Venolia ever again. Mahle is a original equipment item, it may be a little heavier than your off the shelf forged unit, and not quite as strong, but will function better in everyday use! My experience with forged units is they require a bit more clearance for expansion, the engine will use more oil etc... Unless your all out racing there is really no real reason to use them. If the price on the Mahle units is reasonable, then it's original equipment status works for me. I guess you could say ease of fitment is my main point, $70.00-90.00 a hole or even $95.00 or $100.00 is reasonable to me for a high quality everyday use unit...

Mahle pistons from BMW for my M90 were $250 each!! According to the shop that did my engine, it took J&E 3X to get them made to the builders satisfaction, but they did without any further problems.

BMW Prices

Buy pistons from BMW, you will pay BMW prices...M90 pistons I think would be in higher demand than M30 pistons at this stage of the game. I will be surprise if they are cheaper than $100.00 each though, hopeful I can get a few sets to reduce that price a little, I wish I was a wholesaler for them.... $825.00 for a set of 5 pistons complete for my Audi ur quattro from JE.

100 bucks each is cheap...

01 MAHLE PISTON 91,97MM("0") 6 09/1982 11251276701 Cat=No, ENDED

Since they are NLA from BMW.

Probably cheaper than the last 2 euro dirty engines I have bought.

Anyone considering a M30 b35 block with a M30 b34 head at 9.7:1 compression?

best combo is m30 b35 engine, with custom 10:1 forged pistons, you get the compression, with the better flowing head and larger valves....

I like the idea also but when you talk to builders like Ray Korman they don't want any part of of a 10:1 engine with 91 octane and no knock sensors.

To build or not to build 10:1 ...?

I really think that this engine will respond fine with increased cooling capacity, nice copper head gasket, 285-290 cam, and some properly jetted Webers or in my case 45mm SK's... 91 Octane is poor gas to begin with no doubt about that. I figure 8-10 initial with less than 28 degrees total advance at this point. This new MSD 6 programmable spark box allows you to set the timing map. I can see myself cutting the tops down on these pistons already in my brothers milling machine, or not...!

Ummm - you guys in Oz use the Ron method and we use average of the RON and the MON.
Your 98 is our 93.....

Better yet - we have lots of grades available!

One more try

No one expressed any interest, surprised, perhaps everyone is having some custom forged units made...? Placing a call to find out what's happening with Mahle of Europe's computer systems... I didn't think getting a gray market pistons would be that difficult...
