What are you guys doing to avoid all the oil spilling down on all the suspension components when removing the oil filter of the E9 or any BMW from the 80's and 90's fore that mater. Any tricks?

Well, I have a top bolt canister but I use a zip-lok bag under the can once the bolt is loose. Pulling upwards I push the PS lines out of the way as best I can. If your Alt still has external regulator unplug it from the back for a bit more room. The top bolt cans are fatter than the bottom bolt original canister.

When I had my oil changed at Casey Motorsports in August 2017, Sean Casey had some magnetic material he molded into a funnel under the filter. Can't remember the name of the product though.

Since I'm a visual learner can someone post pics that highlight the difference between the orinal oil filter setup and the newer style?

This is the original style bottom bolt canister.

My 72 still has the original bottom bolt canister. I always remove the whole 4 bolt assembly from the engine block and lift it out from the top (only minimal drips from the block to a drain pan below) and then empty and clean the canister in a separate drain pan.

My trick was to install the spin on adapter. Easier to change and better filters (royal purple or Mobil 1) available anywhere.

Made an even bigger mess changing the oil on my E30 320is. Can't make sense of the location BMW chose for their filters.

I have a lift now and am looking forward to changing my oil that way. but first the car will need to be restored.
Starting real soon now. Any day. Really.

Autowerks, You stated: "I wonder if a spin adapter is........."

The answer is - yes it is. Bert P produces them, and I have one that I am not going to use. I'll sell it for his price, but I'll pay for shipping. Let me know if you are interested via a PM (conversation started)

Adapter has been sold.
