i have noticed recently that our buddies at getbmwparts have been significantly raising their prices of late.

for instance at the end of last year - and now in february
door gaskets were 317 (list) on getbmwparts - now are 376 each ... while bmw of south atlanta is currently 333. getbmwparts - website price has gone up from 270 to 301.

hood grilles were 165 now 207 ... with their web price has gone from 132 to 166. bmw south atlanta is 188.

my point is, their list on these has jumped significantly while their web price has gone to close to what the list was previously ... all while the euro is very affordable compared to the dollar.

Hood foam just cost me $84 vs $60 a couple years ago. For foam. Btw, don't clean it with Simple Green, it removes oil and dirt but releases the adhesive and will then get chopped up in the fan, amhik.

FWIW From my days as a BMW parts manager suggested list price from BMW was just that suggested...discounts off of list were a joke as we would mark up list by 15% or more and give the wholesale customers 20 % off "list" (the smart shops would demand cost plus pricing which is the way to go). With the margins on new cars dropping the owners always wanted more $$ from the back of the house....I got out before the big corporations like Penske, Auto Nation, Lithia etc came in with their bean counters so I can only imagine how that has played into pricing at the dealer level ... What I see now is that some dealers see the internet sales as found money in that it is out of their usual selling area so losing a little profit is acceptable but the discounts are getting smaller. It would be interesting to see if these recent changes are at the Dealer level or BMW raising prices. Those going to Monterey this year that are going to be sitting down with the folks from the Classic division may want to question the pricing.

I posted this the other day and feel it is related to this subject.

Not only are prices going up by dramatic amounts it is getting harder and harder to find places to look up parts and prices.
Realoem is my major part search engine but the prices are over the top.
I don't pay much attention to them.
I have no idea who runs realoem and how they get their prices.
I googled this and others are asking the same question about realoem.
I sent an email yesterday to the email shown on the home page.
No answer yet but the others have said they never got an answer and that was in 2010.

Dirk posted this the other day and you can see my answer.

Maybe I didn't post my thoughts on this matter but my thought every single time I've seen threads commenting about BMW's high part pricing is that we are very, very fortunate to have the availability of parts that we do for cars such the E9's and 2002's, at *any* price.

Try to get anything for an Italian car of the era. Or French, or pretty much anything else European. How about $800 bearings, and you need 4. $54 6 mm special bolt. $7 washers, and you need 24. Small end bearings $75 and you need 12. Not just the parts, the documentation Germans have is over the top compared to anyone else. It is amazing that you can go to the Bosch tradition website and find out all Bosch products your car had, German OR not, the PN's, the exploded diagrams, substitute PNs. Marelli? NOTHING. Nothing official from the company. You have to scrounge on the forums for scanned period documentation which at best is inconsistent.

I have never been so gleeful to pay $80 for a perfectly cut under hood foam so I don't have to spend 6 hours doing it. Or $54 for the same period Hella headlamps, or a $100 head gasket... I have been buying all the parts I need and then some. This can't last forever The aftermarket eventually kicks in for lower-level parts but its no panacea either...

Parts for 1960's - 1970's era Alfa Romeos are readily available and the prices are more similar to e9's than Luis quote above suggests. A main, rod, thrust bearing set for a 2L Alfa costs $187 from a US source - not $800. More obscure cars - Lancias, Citroens - may be different.

Given that the Euro has weakened against the dollar over the past year, the USD prices of European parts should be dropping!

no good

real oem sucks
i never even go there
its a joke
you can find part lists in much better places

Believe me I'm not complaining. I'm just showing that others are offering services to support their classic car owners.

Here is a link to the Mercedes Benz Classic center.

They even have access to their ETK parts search engine.
Can't speak about their prices as I really don't know but at least they
are out there offering service, parts and help.

Porsche is also doing this.

I read something recently from BMW NA stating that there were 300,000 classic or vintage car owners.

BMW Group Classic also has website and you can look up and buy parts but it is in Germany. Not sure how the parts ordering is handled.

let me be clear - i AM complaining. as jmackro stated, the euro is down ... the parts should be going down, not up. am i thankful that parts are available - hell yes. but when a company sold several hundred thousand cars worldwide with m30 engines ... some version of engine parts should be available.

i am talking about 20 to 25% jump in 2 months on many parts ... while the euro remains down. and 375 for our door gaskets for instance. the chrome hood + side grilles are up 25%

I use ECS Tuning - www.ecstuning.com as a price reference and my local dealer matches.
For example I just purchased the hood grills 51131827281 and paid $168.15 each.

I find it easier to look up the part numbers on realoem.com then put them in ECS's search. Personally, I like realoem for part look up since they are the same as BMW's microfiche. I have always wondered who owns/operates that site. I don't think it is BMW, but you never know.

That's a nice offer Warren. Shipping and duty could kill this. W&N is right around 300 for this molding plus shipping and maybe duty.
It can be bought for that at a US dealer that is willing to work with you for good prices.

I bought a bunch of metal parts from W&N last fall and most came through with out duty but a couple I had to pay for. It was about $200 to US Customs and they held the packages until it was paid.

Hi Gary, What is the Duty rate for imports into the US, I am in Canada but am only 3 miles from the boarder of Washington State. I can check if it is cheaper to import through Canada.

RealOEM is an excellent site to view parts diagrams and get part numbers however their prices are a bit off, altho with the recent price increases maybe they just haven't been updated. My latest experience was with these two small parts for the doors. OEM listed the door lock gasket at $1.64,dealer was $3.06.OEM's price for this little bumper was $1.25,dealer was $7.00! OEM prices were more realistic for what the part was but hey when you need it what else ya gonna do?

One wonders if the rise of 3D printing will mean that on one hand we may be able to manufacture our own parts ( perhaps good ), however on the other hand many OEM parts will no longer be available from suppliers because everyone 3D prints them and it's no longer viable to make and stock them ( definitely bad ).
It will be ironic if the cost of the downloaded software to program the printer to make the part, ( I presume that's how it works ), is more than the cost of the original part.
