I ordered a hood roundel 51 14 5 480 181. It is identified as the "older style metal painted" roundel for the hood.

Unfortunately, it is a tad smaller in diameter and also does not have the same height as the one on the car.

Is there a better source for this "raised-letter" hood roundel?

IMHO, and as far as i know, what you might have is actually the original roundel, made in china, yes

let me explain, i was told that the front hood and the rear bonnet roundel was in fact the same part, slightly smaller in diameter than the one that is at the right side of your photo

that original roundel is known to come in the rear bonnet inside a chromed ring that has a slightly rounded shape that is in contact with the bonnet

well, the funny thing is tha original cars, i assume older cars, have a similar but flat chromed ring in the front hood

in fact i have one chrome ring for that purpose that i will use in the future if i repaint the car

a question, Bez, please, is the new part aluminium, raised letters, and painted with normal paint, or with enamelled colours ?, is the blue, blue or violet ?

thanks

ps, you have a PM

BTW, if i search for this reference number it does not give use in the e9, the closest model is the e12

the reference given for front hood for e9 is, 51145081747

so my question is, where did you fiound this reference ?

RE: 51 14 5 480 181

Feels like die-cast metal (heavy), raised letter, painted.

Color is true to the picture.

I can't believe it is Made in China!

Bought from Bavarian Autosport $26

This is the correct part number for the hood emblem.

51 14 5 081 747 is available at Tomkinson for $37.25.

Unfortunately, it requires the base which is NLA: 51 14 5 780 170

Do not buy raised letter roundel from BavAuto

I should have done my research before placing my order:

I just checked the figment guide on BMW of South Atlanta.

This part is not for the E9.

These are the classic BMWs...it lists:

Classic BMW 1602 Manual Sedan 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971
Classic BMW 2000 Automatic Sedan 1969, 1970
Classic BMW 2000 Manual Sedan 1969, 1970
Classic BMW 2002 Automatic Sedan 1969, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977
Classic BMW 2002 Manual Sedan 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977

typically, Rogerstii sells BMW parts ... at, or around list price. be wary of their shipping costs. my suggestion is to get the part number and buy from Tomkinsonbmwparts.
