There was another thread where the 'dogleg' was described as the 'ultimate' box. Some general commentary about the ratios not really being the best for an e9 (especially with standard diff ratios). I tend to agree, overdrive must better proposition, if one was to go that way (5 speed).

Suitability of any gear box must take into account multiple factors.

(1) driving application - racing, rally, hill climbs, long highway trips, etc
(2) R&P ratio (final drive ratio).
(3) tire size
(4) engine torque and HP curves

There is a very good justification for a close ratio dog-leg patten gearbox as there is for a OD (0.8) gearbox.

i have a "dogleg" in the rally car…. 120 km/h is already 4000 rpm… so max speed is 180 km/h at 6000 rpm.
Sure not fun on highways …. if it is more than 100 km to a rally is use the trailor... :)

if i may give some "comments" , and this is imho experience , average price for a dogleg is 1500 € , rebuilt ad 500 €. ( mostly not that many parts to change) . The shiny exterior is nice but of no real value.
So i come to 2000 € which is 1.790 pounds……..

if this reply is not allowed in "for sale" threads, please admins delete it.

Fair game IMO. Also fair to start high and adjust based on market response.

No problem with your comments or opinions, great to share - it helps with discussion. If i may. To some people the finish, whilst no value to yourself, IS important (as it is to me on my race cars), the builder i use the majority of his customers now want a vapour blasted case over say an unfinished or even painted, as with the replated hardware. Good vapour blasting is quite costly here in the UK. Also, i think your rebuild costs are low, in fact very low. If you can point me in the direction of the your builder i would be very pleased to use at this price, even with EU shipping. It depends on what needs replacing in the gearbox, and what the basic rebuild price actually includes - some still use sealant in lieu of gaskets!

I've found over the last 6/7 years having had quite a few gearboxes rebuilt, some for my race cars, some to sell, a couple to 'sit' on, that the state of used gearboxes has declined, significantly, i.e. there are frequently more parts inside that need replacing. To be honest, they are getting harder to find, and what is out there has not been looked after. It's all very well the average person buying a used box, then for example, having to replace the main layshaft and centre case due to damage - as i had to to - well, pay my builder to. You can imagine the cost of this, it cost me an awful lot more than what you propose. Tell me, where would one buy these parts, it was only due to the great relationship that i have with my builder that i was able to secure these parts. Most would have to buy another gearbox! (many are looking for cases for example for the Samsonas conversion). So, one has to take on the risk ownership when buying used, and then having it refurbished.

Again, due to the state of used gearboxes, i will not sell anyone a used gearbox anymore. I have had my fingers burned over buying an equally expensive item and would not place others in that position. The above box has elicited much interest from potential buyers around the world, yes, no definitive buyer yet, but i have had offers reasonably close, but not quite close enough (actually, one at the asking price but shipping was prohibitive). You will also find that the builders with great reputations, such as Neil at AllGears has a huge backlog, and should he sell you a gearbox - it would be a great deal more, and he sells many. You may find that mine is actually one of the cheaper rebuilt boxes being sold - maybe a reflection of the risk that others take and build in to their cost, maybe because i am actually not being greedy on what i want for it over cost. If it does not sell, it sits on my shelf with the other high value items that i have for the race cars - if it sells, great, it puts a small dent into the mechanical fuel injection costs that i have to bear.

A few pictures attached that show damage from used purchases. The LSD unit is another, which i fortunately i got my money back on - although it took a huge amount of effort, frustration and time. Whilst repairable, the cost was far more than an LSD is worth (the buyer then went on to sell it again, albeit a little 'cagey' re the condition). The broken gear tooth, no choice but to replace, a product of a worn bearing, which resulted in excessive damage to the inside of the case which in turn had to be scrapped. I've just dismantled a used strut/hub that was taken from a road used car - the bearing had completely disintegrated! It digresses slightly, but makes a point on the risk buying used, and a gearbox at that!?

On a side note, the 265/6 overdrive gearboxes are getting very difficult to source in any condition used or rebuilt and especially with the internal gear (which i still available at a price from BMW) and the speedo drive (which is not available). Many of the few i do see for sale don't have the gear/speedo drive.

500euro is about $600USD.

I don’t know anyone reputable that will rebuild a BMW 5spd gearbox for that low anount. Perhaps an old 4spd from a 2002 can be done for $600. And this assumes it only needs synchros/ bearings and gaskets. i think a common cost here in the USA is about $1000 for a run of the mill rebuild (eg nothing broken inside). I too have bought used gearboxes only to find bad shafts/cases, and spent $$ &months hunting down usable second hand parts (and the occasional NOS golden nugget). On a Datsun 210 5spd (common Spridget upgrade), it took me 9 months to find a NOS layshaft. Only cost $200, but finding it was tough. I think I made over 30 phone calls plus hours on line finding the places to call. Many places needed photos, dimensions & tooth counts because they were digging through their “misc old junk” bins.

What we need is a guy like Steve Schwitters who makes bespoke parts for Alfa gearboxes. The only rub is that they cost $6000.

I think the asking for the dogleg is high but within reason.

Speedo drives are easy to find...most 262 four spds have them.....but you also need the gear to drive it, contrary to what someone selling just the shaft gear on here has said....those 265’s without speedo gear have a spacer on the output shaft instead of the gear...

Also, why do people refer to Close Ratio Trans as Dog Leg? That refers to the shift pattern having first down and left on a detent, has zero to do with ratios in box...

Al,
One could argue that the dogleg gearbox from the euro e24’s was a little more close ratio than the normal pattern 5spds (which we refer to as OD transmissions). And these had a dogleg pattern. So we sloppily use the two names indiscriminately.

I concur. All doglegs that came behind an M30 are by default close ratio transmissions. That includes the G265/5 and the ZF S5 18/3. ZF
did offer this transmission as an overdrive dogleg, but not for BMW M30’s.

Not all Getrag close ratio transmissions that came behind an M30 are a dogleg. The G280 comes to mind.

FYI - I know someone selling a 3.07 LSD if any US buyers are considering this box.
