f i may give some "comments" , and this is imho experience , average price for a dogleg is 1500 € , rebuilt ad 500 €. ( mostly not that many parts to change) . The shiny exterior is nice but of no real value.
So i come to 2000 € which is 1.790 pounds……..
No problem with your comments or opinions, great to share - it helps with discussion. If i may. To some people the finish, whilst no value to yourself, IS important (as it is to me on my race cars), the builder i use the majority of his customers now want a vapour blasted case over say an unfinished or even painted, as with the replated hardware. Good vapour blasting is quite costly here in the UK. Also, i think your rebuild costs are low, in fact very low. If you can point me in the direction of the your builder i would be very pleased to use at this price, even with EU shipping. It depends on what needs replacing in the gearbox, and what the basic rebuild price actually includes - some still use sealant in lieu of gaskets!
I've found over the last 6/7 years having had quite a few gearboxes rebuilt, some for my race cars, some to sell, a couple to 'sit' on, that the state of used gearboxes has declined, significantly, i.e. there are frequently more parts inside that need replacing. To be honest, they are getting harder to find, and what is out there has not been looked after. It's all very well the average person buying a used box, then for example, having to replace the main layshaft and centre case due to damage - as i had to to - well, pay my builder to. You can imagine the cost of this, it cost me an awful lot more than what you propose. Tell me, where would one buy these parts, it was only due to the great relationship that i have with my builder that i was able to secure these parts. Most would have to buy another gearbox! (many are looking for cases for example for the Samsonas conversion). So, one has to take on the risk ownership when buying used, and then having it refurbished.
Again, due to the state of used gearboxes, i will not sell anyone a used gearbox anymore. I have had my fingers burned over buying an equally expensive item and would not place others in that position. The above box has elicited much interest from potential buyers around the world, yes, no definitive buyer yet, but i have had offers reasonably close, but not quite close enough (actually, one at the asking price but shipping was prohibitive). You will also find that the builders with great reputations, such as Neil at AllGears has a huge backlog, and should he sell you a gearbox - it would be a great deal more, and he sells many. You may find that mine is actually one of the cheaper rebuilt boxes being sold - maybe a reflection of the risk that others take and build in to their cost, maybe because i am actually not being greedy on what i want for it over cost. If it does not sell, it sits on my shelf with the other high value items that i have for the race cars - if it sells, great, it puts a small dent into the mechanical fuel injection costs that i have to bear.
A few pictures attached that show damage from used purchases. The LSD unit is another, which i fortunately i got my money back on - although it took a huge amount of effort, frustration and time. Whilst repairable, the cost was far more than an LSD is worth (the buyer then went on to sell it again, albeit a little 'cagey' re the condition). The broken gear tooth, no choice but to replace, a product of a worn bearing, which resulted in excessive damage to the inside of the case which in turn had to be scrapped. I've just dismantled a used strut/hub that was taken from a road used car - the bearing had completely disintegrated! It digresses slightly, but makes a point on the risk buying used, and a gearbox at that!?
