Hey, my turn signal switches are wonky. Don't work very well.

Wondering what it would take to do the swap to the newer ones so that

  • the turn signal is on the LEFT,
  • the wiper is on the RIGHT

For the turn signal, seems like there are a lot of part #s, so confused on what the right one?

Realoem for a 74, shows:

Why so many part #s?

Same with the wiper switch:

You are prudent to be cautious here. My impression is that there was a fundamental change in late 1973 whereby the direction indicators moved from right- to left-stalk and the wiper control switch moved from a 3-position pull up switch on the centre console, on the left opposite to the cigarette lighter, to a 3-position stepped sweep on the right-hand stalk. Wiper and wash/wipe activation remained unchanged with a push-in action on the end of the stalk for the former and a pull-back action for the latter. The rear window element switch moved from being an orange push-up affair under the wheel on the knee-pad panel to replace the wiper mode switch on the centre console just mentioned. At the same time the direction indicators moved from right to left stalk. The later, left, stalk does the direction indicators and the headlight/dipped/flash. At least, that is my experience from ownership of a 1973 CSi Series 1 VIN2265059, December 1972 CSL VIN 2285295 and a December 1973 CSi Series 2 VIN 4350022, the last two of which I retain (all right-hand drive but the first may well have been a Concessionaires conversion). It follows from this that the plugs are different in all cases which I know to my chagrin on at least two occasions. They are not interchangeable. There must be corresponding changes to the looms obviously, too. I hope that you may be just a little wiser as a result of reading this but, I expect, not much. Best wishes, John.

FWIW and probably no help in your instance .... I was able to use the turn signal/wiper switch from a 73 e3 on my 71 coupe and moved it to the left side and the dip switch to the right. In my case the harness and switch were both molex connectors although I did have to move a couple of pins. Not being a purist it doesn't bother me that I don't have the writing on the switch facing up.

Used the headlight/turn and wiper switches from an E3 in my older style '72 E9. Took me some time to work it out and to make sure everything was reversible. It made the controls the same as my e28 and my more recent Peugeot dd. The E3 switches are I believe the same as the '73 onwards E9s. They have a much more solid feel, and were still easily and cheaply available when I did the change. It helped that the wiring on the E3 and E9 has the same colours for the same functions.
I wrote up the job, but rereading it recently didn't find it very clear.

your best bet would be to get the used 74 parts
the rear window switch goes to the console
heres the wiring diagram
