School me on oil pans

Trying to plan for which oil pan and oil pump to use in my swap. Help!

I currently have a 2.8L M30 in the E3. I’m not sure if this makes a difference, but I also have a manual, non-power steering rack. I also have an M30B34 from a 1988 E28 535i that I’m cleaning up to swap in.

The safe bet seems to be to use the 2.8’s pan and pump, but can/should I consider the E28 setup? I’d like to avoid a trial and error install. I also have a pan and pump from an E9 3L, as well as a Euro 735i pan.

Pictured is the E28 pan (top) and the Euro 735i pan.

Once you turn the pans over and look inside it will all make sense.
Please share that pic with the group here.

Top to bottom is:

88 535i
Euro E32 735i
E9 3.0

I have the oil pumps for the E28 and the 3L. I also have the 2.8L pump and pan in the car now that can be swapped over.

I guess I would prefer to use the E28 oil pump, but it only fits on the motor with the E28 pan, and I don’t know if that fits in the E3.

Don knows for sure but you use the 3.0 pan and modify the oil pump pickup, later pans don't fit the subframe. This is a common b35 mod.

The E28 pan fits just fine. This is the one in my E3 on a B35 motor. I remove the oil sensor and plug the hole.

Perfecto. This is exactly the information that I was trying to confirm before swapping.

Confirmed: E28 pan and oil pump fit into the E3 with no modifications.

Mike to the rescue again!

At the shop we use Euro e24 oil pans.
Best baffles, fits perfect.
Cut the wires.
Back of the pump is original
Front is b35
Slight relief needed on shaft opening
Other pans fit but we like Euro pans best.
