Starter inhibit relay

Need help to understand if this is needed and the exact function.
The car had a manual trans. that was installed a number of years ago.
The starter inhibit relay is so the car will not start when the transmission is in gear, correct?
Please enlighten me.

Not quite. The starter interrupt relay, also referred to as a neutral safety relay, is so the engine can't be started with the auto trans in gear (it will allow starting in Park or Neutral).

Generally the relay is disabled, bypassed, or better, removed, when the AT is replaced by a manual transmission.
