I had a small amount of lateral play in the upper bearing of the steering column so decided to order a new one from BMW - it turns out that the part they now supply is 5mm OD too large in diameter to fit the column housing:

Was there ever a change in the column design? Mine is a very early CSL so wondered if mine might need a part derived off an earlier model on the BMW parts system... Has anyone come across this before?
One of those jobs I wish I hadn't started!
