Along with the spring, what is the correct method to install the BB so that it gets positioned correctly? Is it’s purpose to plug some sort of valve to prevent oil loss from the bore when the engine is off?

Don, that was the picture I was looking at as my motor is a 5/633i vintage. To me, it doesn’t look like the BB does anything so I did not install it with the new spring and seal washer.

My leak source ended up being from the upper timing cover seal. It was leaking down around the view seal washer so that’s why I (hoped and) changed that out first.
