When did they change the trunk utility boxes? I have the old gray with white trim, and a black with black trim. I'm guessing the gray one is older, or is the black one from a different car altogether?

No, this is an entirely different animal, the black one. Not sure what coupe it came with. I need to post a pic, need an email addy to send it to.

Holy guacamole, it really IS a regular basket painted black. I picked at it a bit, and sure as anything, it's been rattle canned. In hindsight, it looks like my sprayed wipers and rear tail lights. D'oh.

I'm going to experiment with soda blasting plastic today. Keep you posted, as you may be able to go back to grey.

Following up on my soda blasting experiment. It didn't work very well on the utility box. I think some of the grey vinyl paint would be a decent option. It also didn't work well on the beat up white plastic border.

I did soda blast a visor. It worked fairly well, with no damage to the pattern. It's still dirty. I think that I will invest in a real soda blaster. This was done with a $20 gravity feed blaster from Harbor Freight. I did read on their reviews page that it help if you drill out the gun to feed more soda.

This was a two minute exercise. You can see the spots that I missed.
