Another rookie question for the e9 gurus: it seems that very few coupe owners tint their windows, yet the e9s have generous amounts of glass and modest air conditioning. Why is this?

I have a Huper Optic ceramic tint on one of my e39s and I love it.
 
I like it the way it came from the factory, otherwise it could look like any newer vehicle, why mess with perfection? There is a light tint already, just hard to see.
 
We are proud of E9s and want to make sure folks can see us driving them?

I would tint a Yugo so nobody can know it is me driving that to work.

Heat is not a problem here, brightness is. I wear sunglasses even at my desk.

I have ceramic tint on my M5 as well and what a difference it makes. It comes in a clear look as well yet still lowers heat gain and protects interior wood and leather.
 
I have tinted windows... 25years of patina

My coupe has been tinted.... a super dark tint infact... given the previous custodian of my coupe (who owned 4310155 since new) was based in Texas....

After four years of ownership, an expired warranty and a need for more performance back in the late 1970s this led the owner to pursue Alpina... hence the Alpina period elements throughout my coupe... and a number of power and aesthetic changes to personal tastes (which I loved).

The super-dark window tint also has ~25 years of patina and is holding up very well!...

Given I am in the North East of the USA it doesn't need the tint, but I am sticking with it, just because :-)

I had a limo dark tint for years, 83-98, and loved the look and comfort. But did make driving at night adventuresome.
I now have a med tint that I love as well.
I live in high desert and the sun and UV are often very extreme, ask my dash! I always use a folding window cover when parking outside for the front window.
My CS is Polaris and makes it stand out quite well.
I am not a purist, but my $.02

Clear - high end glass heat treatment here in Austin- by a shop that does all the Bentley's/Jags and Astin Martins from the local dealer quoted me 500.00 which includes the front windshield. I think this is the last thing I'll have done, probably next spring. but just for general info I put up their quote.

Hey Riverflyer: Do you miss your e39?

I have two e39s; a sedan and a wagon. When I travel in the wagon I often miss the tint, particularly when traveling north/south on sunny days.

Some of the e9s out there don't have a/c, and I was thinking tint and a shut off valve for the heater core might suffice for a non-a/c car (maybe).
 
I tinted my windows

As a self-described air-conditioning freak, I had my windows tinted a few years back as one of a number of iterative steps to help the a/c to cool off that big-ass greenhouse.

Long story short, the things you read about near-transparent window tint that block nearly 100% of UV are more for building glass and basically don't seem to apply to automotive tint that you have to able to shrink-to-fit the E9's beautiful but problematic rear windshield.

I started off by saying "just don't make it too dark," looked at it in horror when it was done because it was darker than I expected, and then eventually grew to kind of like it. The car is signal red (just a tad darker than verona), which is already a dark deep red, so it's not like the tinted glass stands in stark contrast. No one has ever commented on the tinted glass, so it must not stand out.

I wrote up the experience and posted it to a professional tinting website. The consensus seemed to be that the curved glass is a total bitch that limits your options, and that the guy who did it did as good and professional a job as could be done under the circumstances.

Ok Rob - I will say it now, and loud, I LIKE YOUR TINTED WINDOWS!
 
I stick to sunglasses, and when it is hot a box of dry ice in the cabin.

Nice red though in the pictures...
