Wrong engine

E9 I just bought has the wrong engine, number in the wrong place and doesent match the vin. Number is stamped on a land at the rear top of the block, its +21307974+. Head date is 82 and number is 1 277 358 which I know doesn't mean much. Anyone help ID this thing, cant even find a displacement cast into the left side of the thing? Based on your description it sounds like the VIN is exactly where it should be. The motor is a 2.8L from a 1971 US Spec E3 2800. I am estimating that it was built in March ‘71.

The 358 head started in ‘81 and stuck around until the B35. There are versions and iterations of the same castings though (like I, II, III). That isn’t important though...

I don’t know this stuff off the top of my head I’m just good at “the internet”...
