Was bidding on at BaT car, seller said the highest bidder dropped out, but today was notified that he decided to actually purchase. Still in the market for a car.

Ideal car:
Roof: Either slicktop or sunroof :)
Engine: can be original engine but a 3.5L also works and might even be preferred
Transmission: manual 5 speed preferred.
Ideally has A/C
Can be any color, but ideally a darker color.
I'm ok with some rust, but everything needs to be there.

Location: I'm in California, but I'm open to shipping a car from anywhere.
Price: $30,000 max

Want to work on the car myself and my friend who does bodywork so looking more of a project car than a car that is more flushed out. (I know people will say to get the best possible car haha)

Thanks!

Hi. I have mine still for sale. It’s a 3.0 CSi. Was on BaT last week but did not meet reserve. Is $30k your last price? Here is the link to that auction. Let me know.

Posix - with that budget, you are in what I call the "labor intenstive" end of the market. By that I mean, it takes more work to find a good coupe at $30,000 than it does at a higher price point.

I spent three years looking for my car. I joined this forum, as you have done, following the comments on the used cars that came up for sale to learn what to look for. Also, make sure you go through the FAQs here. These too will help you understand.

I recommend, to the extent you can, getting to BMW specific events in your area and asking people you meet if they know of cars for sale. Many cars sell by word of mouth. Also, as you are fortunate enough to be in California, make a point to reach out to the excellent resources in your area. If you haven't already visited Don's shop, make it a point to do so. Then seek out other BMW resources; you are in one of the best spots in the US for BMWs.

Lastly, ask for help with specific cars you may be considering. Folks here are amazingly willing to donate their time and energy.

I suggest you PM your choices(or have all of us have a go at them) before you make a move. 50 or so of the "right" photos can reveal so much to the trained eye. And there is so much to be revealed, especially at your price point.

The two i'm considering are both from forum members. Will create a photo album of the photos and upload and ask for advice soon!

Don't let automatics sway you. Body condition more important IMHO. 5-speed conversion is maybe a $3-4k affair. Big deal compared to body work.

This 2800CS didn't get bid up very high which is perplexing considering how much more solid it is than most cars for sale:

That conversion figure is low. A used transmission is $1,500. At least double for rebuilt with the 265/6 output shaft bearing NLA. Clutch/brake pedals, slave, custom driveshaft, crossmember, clutch disk, flywheel, shift console. You are over $3K after acquiring parts. Then add labor at e9 specialist rates and you are well beyond $4K. I still agree that body is more important though.
