This morning at our local C 'n' C we had the Art Simonds built CSL which was recently brought down from NorCal.

Fully built as a street version of what a modern CSL would be. S38 with all the trimmings, leather covered Scheels, leather door cards, AC, etc... Thankfully the manual winding window stayed as in. ;)

It will be at Monterey this summer.

I have posted an article about this car before...as I recall it has 7 series front brakes and welded seems among other mods.

Italian spec CSL bought in SoCal...

I do hope they didn't use an original CSL to create this.

It is. They also used original CSL sheet metal said to have been some of the last NOS pieces around such as NOS fenders (thin sheet). The article is worth a read...you'll have to search it on the forum.

I had the honor of checking this out on a rack after the show. It is simply amazing. The owner(s) are member's of this site and there are some details I will let him divulge about the car, that is not really my place. That being said, great new owner and it's in good care. If deQuincey doesn't divulge the name of the strut bar, I recall seeing it, it is stamped right on it, not a name I've heard of before, but can find out.

The underside of the car is like brand new. It is amazing. And to put some of the purists at ease, don't worry, all the original bits are currently being accounted for. Again, I'll let owner explain but this is an original Ultra Light Weight and you have to hear how it sounds, it's crazy!

Another member I was told had his hand in the car, our famous Paul Cain. I'm sure he would like to contribute a little when the time is right. Like everyone said, there is already a link to the car on here, can't wait to read it myself. I'm a purist too, but I'm in love with this car, it's hard not to be when you see all the detail in person and hear the monster roar. Congrats on new ownership!!!!!!!!!

Here is the link to the magazine http://www.bimmer-mag.com/issues/47 Does anyone have a subscription that can repost the article? Copy paste or whatever?

Nice.

Think the rudder is an area that can be improved upon.

Congrats and Enjoy it!

Daddywad from this forum makes/sells the strut bar. It is an Alpina repro. He also sells the Alpina airbox and and high quality CSL spoilers.

yes, that is the one, daddywad ! i didnt remember Marks nickname

I don't think you are talking about the same strut bar. It is an RC Motorsport. Please see picture and stamp. If there were any for sale I'm sure there won't be after this post...but.....you asked...;)

VIN is also pretty clear even though I think already in registry...

Update: I noticed it is not in registry but the article in Bimmer lists the VIN#

So sorry but I just don't get it at all. Why?

I can certainly understand that modifying an original CSL may be sacriligeous to some. Indeed, there are simply too few of them left to mess around with.

But in this case, since it was done by one of the original guys who created the race version of the car at the factory in the first place, I personally feel that it creates a new fully legit version of this icon.

If it had been done by anyone other then someone from the original team in Munich I would likely not feel the same.

I see what you are talking about. It looks like RC Motorsport copied the same design from Alpina just like Mark did yes, very similar if not exact. Both look like great quality and nice "out of the way" fitment. I checked RC Motorsports site and didn't see them still available but not 100% sure. Plus would rather buy from fellow member and give him the business anyways.
