I tried searching using a variety of terms and I haven't be able to find anything on how to remove the side trim.
If anybody has done a write up on this I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction, thanks.

Fred,

you talking about the rear, door or front - side trim? if you are talking about the rear ... you have to remove the rear windows ... and the other fun is reaching around the rear shock tower. lots of fun

scott

That's why I love this forum, you can always get an answer and usually well informed and quickly.

Yes Scott, those are the pieces I'm trying to remove, you make it sound fun.

Matthew, do you know what size are the nuts?

+1
lots of things to be dissassembled before being able to reach the nuts
the system inlcudes bolts that fit in the chrome trim parts, and nuts that have a rubber washer embeded
if you go from the front to the rear

front end, remove front grilles to get access
lateral front, remove lokari fender covers, if fitted in your car
door, remove trim panel and probably window mechanism and glass
rear quarter, remove trim panel and window mechanism
boot, remove upholstery from inner pannels, and remove rear panel cover piece

as you see, a real PITA !

good luck

I didn't need to remove any glass or mechanisms. I used a very slim extender bar to reach some of the 9mm nuts (I'm pretty sure they're 9mm) below the rear windows. A ratchet spanner was useful also.

If you ever had body work done, the nuts will likely be different.
On my coupe they were 7,8 & 9mm
I replaced all of them for the RE- install.

And... probably a good idea is to order new hardware when you re-install. I got the 45 fastners from La Jolla, and they came with the correct rubber nut washers which makes putting the trim back on so much easier! I also used a polishing wheel attached to my grinder and some polishing cream to clean up the chrome- mine was in very good shape so it came out well- depending on the condition of yours you may have to re-chrome, but for about 10 bucks I was able to bring mine to a respectable shine.

It could be a full day job but so worth it!

You mean Stainless (belt line trim)

I helped Stan do a couple of the nuts on the quarter trim.
What a PITA. Having a long double joint pair of needle nose pliers would help a lot.
Better yet, remove the rear windows (including mechanism) for unfettered access to all the fasteners.

Remove the old T screws from the channel in the trim. You may need a shot of P-Blaster and gentle tapping with a screw driver.

While the trim is off send it to Speedway in Santa Ana for polishing and ceramic coating. Looks awesome after!!!

Belt trim

I see lots of replies to this, heres one more
really it's not that bad,
two hours, even if you have never done it,
make sure windows are up.
remove door panels, remove grills, find a flexible 9mm socket, and a plain 9mm,
1-6-9"- 1/4' extension, for the rears,
a 1/4" ratchet ,
through the rear window brackets are three holes,
the flex, maybe with a little tape around it, keeps flexible but not flopping, hardest ones are along shock tower, right and left rear,
small hands work best here,
remember that most have been on for a while, the rubber washer hardens and acts like a lock washer, gentle prying,I used swiss army blade and piece of leather to not scrape paint,
45 nuts later....
I did not mention the front sides,
look under fender same procedure.

At least in the USA the belt line trim is the moldings at the bottom of the windows or the very top of the door & quarter skins. On my 72 coupe they are chromed brass, not sure on other years. The body side moldings or simply side trim are the aluminum moldings that bolt on a few inches down from the top of the door & quarter skins and front fenders, they run to the door handles on our coupes. Other countries may have different names for body parts (the English certainly do) but the above would be correct for the USA at least. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Hi guys,

I noticed that nose has special shape to fit trim inside - see attached. But I noticed some cars don’t have this shape only holes to attach trim. Also mine only has visible holes but not this shape.

My car came without trim I will be mounting it now when I get trim back from polishing... Will nose trim fit proper or not?

I've removed the aluminium side mouldings, but there are broken and rusted screws. Problem is trying to remove the badly rusted and jammed screws from the slots.
Has anyone got advice on how to get these out without destroying the moulding? They're pretty jammed in.

I sprayed wd40 or any bolt loosening spray left for a day than start working on them with pillars.

i would spray PB Blaster on them ... let them sit and then try to work them loose ... might take a couple of applications and let it soak overnight. i would then put the nut back on the T bolt, then grab it with a pair of vice grips and wiggle it to see if it will come loose. if not, tap the wrench with a rubber mallet (sideways) to try to loosen it. you don't want to hit down or on an angle as you can kink the belt trim.
