Consensus on valve cover finishing.

Howdy all-prepping to install a/c and detail motor. Two questions

1. Has anyone had your motor dry-ice cleaned and was it successful/expensive?

2. Options for valve cover finish;

A-bead blast and seal with high heat matte clear coat
B-prep/primer and paint the enamel gray
C-prep/primer and go black wrinkle paint.

Appreciate the input-she’s getting close.

I had mine powder coated. Prior to powder coating, I simply cleaned up the cover with steel wool and WD40.
 
Prior reply seems to have disappeared. I had mine powder coated.

That said, I like the look of simply cleaning it up with steel wool and WD40.
 
If you media blast it, make sure that you remove the plate inside the valve cover A lot of crap hides in there
Here is one that I did, I powder coated it with a type of black wrinkle and a Porsche 944T one

Now that is stunning. Powdercoat it is. Anything I need to know to get this result?
 
I do all my own work but I am sure that there must be a local place that does powder coating and a lot of time, they can do the media blasting as well On the baffle plate, I grind down the rivets so they are flush with the cover, pop the plate off To put the plate back on, I drill for small screws, tap them and red loctite the screws in I use larger washers to help keep the plate in place S far as powder coat goes, there are a lot of different textures in black Have a look at Prismatic powders to get an idea on what is available

These both look great. For the black/silver, I assume you powder coated it all black and then sanded down to the silver on the raised portions rather than masking off the silver beforehand?
For @Stevehose did you spray paint your air filter box - these are generally dark grey but the black looks pretty nice.
I have a media blasting cabinet and have been powder coating some of the smaller parts (pulley, metal reservoir, oil filter housing, etc) but only have a small oven so couldn't fit a valve cover in there.

For the VGS application, the box was black (and Alpina also?). I used VHT black satin epoxy spray paint, not easy to work with but once you get the hang of it (patience) it's great.

maybe a dumb question but do you powder coat all - then remove coating to reveal stripes/logo? nm just saw post. TYVM
 
I really like the vapor hone and CeraKote approach that @HB Chris recommends. You need to plan on being relentless with the wash-out of the valve cover to make sure there is no abrasive left inside the area covered by the baffle. You could probably also grind off the rivets and then re-attach, but make sure you clean it out.
 
I polish the ribs and the emblem beforehand and then tape the ridges, powder coat, and the very carefully do a clean up and final polish on the ridges Have to be gentle and careful on the emblem use something fairly hard to hold the sandpaper
