Need sound deadening and heat shield recommendations

Well it is pretty cold and snowy here in the DMV. so I am thinking about how to reduce noise and heat in my cars. Neither of my cars have the firewall pad anymore. I want something better than what was on the car. I also want to insulate my trans tunnel my zf trans hums as I drive. Thanks for sharing what you have done, even pics would help.
 
there are 2 basic approaches, both involve removing everything that is there to get down to painted metal. after that, i would prime with self-etching primer (either brush on or spray on). there are many products, and i'm not going to dive down that rabbit hole, just talk about the basic concepts =

basic option 1 - there are many different spray on acoustic treatments, some can be brushed on. there are several thermal types of insulation that can be applied over the acoustic treatment - i am using dynaliner (comes in 3 thicknesses - 1/8", 1/4" and 1/2" and has an adhesive layer).

basic option 2 - put dynamat or dynamat Xtreme throughout the interior (floor, tranny tunnel, firewall, under / behind rear seats + doors). then cover with dynaliner

there is a 3rd option - to just put 1/2" dynacore everywhere as its sound and thermal - it also has an adhesive back. dynacore comes in sheets that are 1/2" and 1" thick

so what am i doing - since my car had just come out of paint, i didn't want to spray anything near the car, so i took the dynamat approach. then i learned that some of the liquid treatments could be brushed on (oh well, missed that one). i am then going to line the tranny tunnel with 1/4" dynaliner and then do the firewall with 1/2" dynaliner. i will probably do everything under the rear seat with dynaliner ... but we shall see. if i was removing / replacing the headliner, i would put 1/2" dynaliner there too. my car already has some thermal insulation on the inside of the door skin and if i make time, i might replace that as well. my recommendation, if you use dynamat, is to buy the 18" x 18" squares - its easier to deal with slightly smaller pieces than stuff that is 50" long.
 
there are also a couple of other things that help with heat
1. replace the thermal insulation on the firewall (engine side)
2. add the metal heat shield on the passenger floor (covers a portion of the firewall and part of the tranny tunnel)
3. have your exhaust header / downpipes ceramic coated

When I did my interior project I added a paint-on thermal barrier inside the cabin, then sound deadening adhesive mat on the floors and inside the door cavities, then a very heavy lay-in mat on top of which went the carpet. The products I used were from second skin audio.
  • Spectrum spray in deadener
  • damplifier pro adhesive mat
  • luxury liner pro sound barrier
  • underneath the door cards and in a few other places I used their "overkill closed cell foam"
In the picture below you can see the sound barrier on top of the adhesive mat.

After all was done I still had a lot of heat infiltration from the exhaust, and later added an exhaust shielding that is attached to the headers and exhaust from the end of the headers to about the mid resonator via clamps. This made a huge difference in the excessive cabin heating, especially when combined with an electrically operated heater diverter valve.
 
Lizard skin then paint dyna mat and only in areas, not needed to do every crook and cranny then foil backed jute as an underlay for the carpet Was easy to install the carpet and trim pieces as it wasn't built up too mush Keeps things quiet, don't know about cooler, doesn't get that kinda hot up here

Can we see the exhaust shielding on the headers and exhaust? it sounds like a nice improvement if you aren't ready to remove your interior.
 
I used a product called Lizard Skin. They have both a heat and sound deadening material... I used both. I sprayed it on and it looks similar to a truck bed lining material. Works well and goes on really easily.

My coupe is stored off-site and I am elbow deep in work on my 2018 Audi so apologies for the late reply. Here are the products I used. I just checked and found that I didnt take any pictures, but will add some in the spring (once the salt is washed from the roads and I bring the coupe home for some work).

I purchased a variety of different clamp sizes to affix the shield to the headers (multiple pipes), straight exhaust sections and the resonator. I cut a template to account for the different shapes (angles and width) and lengths of the three or four sections that made up the area to be shielded. Once I had the templates made I then transferred that onto the heat shield product (below), folding / rounding the sharp edges over and using a punch to create the mounting hole for the heat shield mounting points
