Looking for 3.25 differential for early CSi

you know its much cheaper and easier to change the speedo than it is to buy and remove / replace a diff. you can also have the gear changed in your speedo. check out the FAQ - speedometer + odo gear ratios. sounds like you need a speedo with w=0.7125 ... which should be pretty common in Europe ... much more common than a 3.25 diff

Speedometers

The speedometer ratios are as follows (numbers stamped on the speedometer are rounded and include a mm/yy build date):

3.25 KPH W= 0.679
3.25 MPH W= 1.078
3.45 KPH W= 0.7125
3.45 MPH W= 1.14
3.64 MPH W = 1.2164
Sure, and if I had a 5-speed box w. overdrive, that would be an option.

even if you have a 4 speed, redoing / replacing the speedo is a lot cheaper than replacing the diff ... IF the primary reason for talking about a 3.25 is the speedo being off. replacing a speedo or changing the gear is a couple of hundred bucks. now if you really don't like the rpm at highway speeds, then the 3.25 might make sense ... but i would rather have the 5 speed than the 3.25. remember in 4th gear, 75 mph (120 kph) is 3250 rpm with a 3.25 and 3500 with a 3.45 ... not much difference. with a 5th gear you are talking 2850 vs 2650 +/- and that is more noticeable.

The speedo is just an extra annoyance on top of the revs. And I don't seem to be able to lay my hands on a 5-speed box.

they are getting harder to find, but since you have a 4 speed box, you have the speedo drive hardware on it ... you should be able to get a getrag 265/6 box from an e12, e24, e28 car.

Would’ve been a screaming deal six months ago. For years they had a core charge so you had to send your core back to Europe, which cost a few hundred dollars think $500.

Now with the euro up to $1.20 shipping at $500 plus tariff of 62 1/2% plus Brokerage fee you’re now looking at $4000. Just not quite a screaming deal

So, as I happen to be in Europe, this would be a deal... I think I'll look at the 5-speed option.

Read this FAQ: https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/manual-transmissions.38761/

Casting numbers are almost meaningless, you need a 265/6 from an 80/81 e12 528i with the speedo drive.
From the FAQ: "The 265/6 was introduced in 1980 through 1982 on the e12, e23, e24 and e28. In 1985 BMW also used the 265 instead of the newer 260 box for one year as well as in the e30 M3 but these will not have a speedo drive gear."

"Used on '82 528e and '85 535i. Also on '85 6/735, '80-'81 E12, '81-'82 6/733s and E30 M3s."

Suggests an 81-82 E28 may have had the right gearbox.

What should I look for?

Some days I am glad I live in Europe.... and some other days I wish I lived in the USA. Still, 2300 euros is not cheap... but certainly a good price if the stuff has been remanufactured.... Oh boy, a couple of days ago there was a nice lotery price.... why didn't I bet???
