What’s everyone doing for this part in the oil filter assembly for early cars? Appears 11-42-1-252-465 NLA? Surly someone has found alternative gasket ring other than OEM by now ? #14 in schematic image

I found one of these as well as part 13 before realizing that I didn’t need them for my style filter housing. So, happy to post it in the parts for sale section or PM me, but I can also take some measurements of it first. It didn’t do anything except serve as a spacer it seems, unless I’m mistaken, and therefore something like an M14 nut would likely serve the same purpose.

It´s very important to understand this issuue.

The compression spring (11) presses the reinforce plate (9) onto the lower hole of the oilfilter, thus sealing it off. But only if the gasket ring (10) is installed.

Many times I have seen this reinforce plate missing with only the spring in the oil filter housing left. Since the plate sticks to the oil filter it's often discarded with the oil filter. If the mechanic doesn't understand the function he will just mount the filter without the plate, resulting in bypassing the oil filter.

I think that the confusion arises between the different filter housing/head types. If I look at the filter shown on realoem for my 72 CSi, it shows a filter housing which has the bolt on the bottom securing upwards into the head, and has the part 13 as shown in the original post. In that situation, there is no spring, and it’s not clear what purpose the gasket serves except to lift the oil filter and that small metal plate off of the bottom of the filter housing. If that is the case, then theoretically anything that pushes the filter up towards the underside of the head would work just as well. In your picture, this is a different mechanism with the spring, but perhaps the same eventual purpose? In my case, since I ended up with the oil housing that has the bolt on the top, trying to use the gasket and plate just meant that the filter sat too proud in the housing and I couldn’t mount the head.

The e12 top bolt housing does not use any of those parts.
Yes, which I’ve since discovered. Part of the issue with a 50-year-old car - others before me have made updates along the way which only become apparent once one becomes more experienced with all of the possibilities. I know there’s debate over the top-bolt or bottom-bolt versions, but I do find the top-bolt much easier. Is the housing head different much between them all in terms of the release valve built into the head?

I put a quart size zip-lock bag under the canister to catch the oil. I always remove battery ground too!. The top bolt can is narrower which helps. With a bottom bolt I remove the housing..

I’d welcome that, let me know when posted in parts ? Appreciate it highly!
