1972 Bavaria - Full build and swap

More pics... getting filters on the trumpets. There isn't much info on what to run if you don't have a plenum. On the Bav, there really isn't any space to do a plenum given the proximity of the brake booster and other stuff. I settled on these itg filters. They have a plastic structure on the inside and fit around the trumpets in pairs.

I modified part of the bracket that would typically mount the plenum to mount the intake air temp sensor.

AC system... I have a Resotmod Air blower/evaporator/controls in the inside, a SPAL pusher fan in front, and an Amazon sourced condenser. The lines were all custom bent Restomod Air and Vintage Air. I also used their end fittings... you cut the hose to length and push them on the fitting, ship the lines to them, and they'll crimp them. For the harder to reach areas, I bent Vintage Air lines. Trying to keep everything out of view gets tough with these bigger hoses.

Such an amazing build! So many things I love about your choices.

How is the ride when aired up? What are your psi settings?

Not sure on psi. When you calibrate the system and initially set it up, you start at full low, and then full high, and the system then figures out the in-between. You do have to take measurements of the suspension when putting it together to ensure it isn't too low or high though.

Is the ride bouncy?

I have Air Lift setup which allows each corner to be set at different psi via remote or app connection. Static height is manual adjustment like a coil over with the airbag/air spring for suspension. Took a bit to figure out the balance, but love the instant adjustment. My driveway requires “4x4 mode”.

It's not bouncy, but it's also not as stiff as a coilover setup would be. My air struts are Air Lift, but the management is Accuair. My setup uses sensors at each corner to monitor height and adjusts accordingly to keep it level. You can program in different heights... fully on the ground, drive height, and 4x4 mode. It also has the normal "just push up and down" for everything in between. Having said all that, I would probably go Air Lift for everything if I did it again... just seems easier to keep it all as one manufacturer.

I helped install that accuair system on a batmobile..(not bmw, I mean an actual Batmobile from Michael Keaton's movie, lol). I never knew how great the ride could be and how handy the adjustments were. Very solid systems. I'd def consider using one of those if I were playing with extra funds...:-).

Air Lift recently stopped selling their universal kits, so if you have something that isn't in their normal catalog, I'm not sure what you go with. Not sure if there are other kits out there that fill that void for full custom builds.
 
I need to get some videos up... and taken. Random stuff I may have missed...

Fixing the wiring going to the tail lights. This was also necessary due to the new wiring harness. I kept all of the factory connections, but wired them to the new fuse box.

I used this on the edges around the door. The OEM felt material is hard to come by and this is much cheaper. Nice product in the end.

Rear shelf in, but you can also see the Lizard Skin. It's never seen, but the under carpet and seat areas look much better. This is the sound and heat insulating material.

I'm not sure I would attempt a project of this scope again and the time and money piece cannot be overstated. I stopped keeping records of the cost a long time ago. It's definitely been a learning process though and I would recommend that anyone attempting a restoration of any level go into it with a plan of exactly what you're trying to achieve.

WOW! Great update! Those pics are amazing. I hear you on the scope and costs. I can't imagine how much has gone into yours. Mine's kicking my butt and it's a tame redo in comparison..I started mine as a quick clean up to have a daily driver that I wouldn't stress about...10 years later...here I am...lol.

edit: Would be awesome to see this at the Vintage in NC one day. Would be a bit of a haul, though.
