Hey Gang! Wondering your thoughts about GPS trackers for our Coupes. I am thinking about getting one for that just in case moment when my car disappears like my dog did the other day! If you have one, what are you using and why. I know Apple air tags are an easy answer, but seems TOO simple. Thx - Jim

Most of the small location tags rely on some nearby wireless network. I am not totally certain how they attach to the network (i.e., without passwords and such), but they basically send out an ID number and the system uses network localization to pinpoint the device. That localization is based on databases that Google and others keep that provide the physical location of WiFi base stations. Any routers in range receive this ping from the tag and based one the signal level from the different base stations, and based on that signal level they estimate a position. They also do the same with Bluetooth which uses the location system in phones (which is both GPS and WiFi (as described above).

So these only work in the presence of other networks or devices, but they do indeed work. I have an Apple AirTag on my expensive bicycle, and using Apple FindMy, I (or my wife) can locate the bike in seconds.

If you want a more stand alone system you will need something a bit like Onstar which localizes using GPS, and reports using cellular. I'm sure there are many that are less expensive than Onstar that are only for stolen vehicle location. These are typically quite small (about 3x3x0.5 inches), and are placed in the dash so they have a clear sky "view" through the windshield.

All cars in my world are tagged with the speaker muted.

Suitcases, backpacks and keys we leave with speakers intact.

When you are tracking and you use an Airtag you do not want the Airtag to tell where it is hidden in the car.
