It's a bit of a sneaky workaround, since previously I would contest the PayPal charge by paying UPS their fee and calculating what the correct tariff
should have been and then contesting the difference. This isn't a charge that I can contest since it falls under their "fees", none of which are of course available online for evaluation. I'm going to message W&N and let them know about this one since this is starting to seem predatory on UPS's part.
So I just checked UPS website for the charge amount. Interesting that their own information page says that the fee applies to any item past the first 5 whereas my charge was for anything past the first 3. Regardless, the charge is $3 per line. This was the killer for me - I had multiple small parts that are each individually fairly cheap, yet you could order 20 $5 parts for $100 and then get hit with an additional $51 in UPS fees just for having those extra 17 items above the first 3. Obvious answer would be to just have multiple shipments except for W&N's $49 shipping. I guess I will have to reserve this for large items or expensive items only that are hard to source locally.
OK, keep coming back to edit this as I get more info. In closer evaluation, that "per line" is actually per line of text on the invoice, NOT per item. Meaning that when W&N chooses to helpfully list out the info to make UPS' job easier (HTS and country of origin), anything past the first item with its three lines is adding $12 onto your bill. For example the list below
would get the first item with its three lines in for no extra fee, but the next 2 items have tacked $18 in fees on.
I wrote a letter detailing this to W&N but I'm just one voice. But this seems crazy.
