Headlight bumper holes

I used to think the holes in the top of my bumper had been drilled, but now that we’re restoring it, I see that wasn't the case. I found a new bumper that has them too, although I’ve seen others that don’t;
did they not all come with them? Or are they specific to a particular year?

I think you are right, they exist with and without.
I am not sure however for what purpose the holes are there, must be extra head/fog lights?

There were always holes underneath I think. But the parts book does not offer a bumper with holes and the fog lights they list have a bracket mounted to the bumper iron. How many 50 year old bumpers have their original chrome that can be documented? It would an original owner to convince me.

Mine is original - no holes

So one needs to ask, how did the holes get there? Mine has holes, and many of the fog lights we see have posts to fit into the holes. My holes don’t look like something that someone drilled at home - was the center section of bumper replaced? I do see center bumper sections for sale but haven’t checked whether they have holes or not, perhaps that’s the option?

If you ordered your E9 with the optional fog lights the holes in the lower section came by factory. You could also order additional high beam lamps (very common in rally sport), installed on top of the bumper. So some centre bumper sections came with four holes
