i know the part numbers are different ... one of our members is looking for an e9 armrest set ... and there really aren't any for sale that he has seen. this one looks really similar

Similar, but not quite the same. The shape of the upper end , and the shape of the connector to the door panel are very different. The E24 part has a rather abrupt curve in the connector piece, and then the arm rest goes downward. The E9 top piece flares outwards creating a (IMO) more graceful curve from the top anchor to the arm rest proper

do you mean the plastic part at the top of the grip (with the plastic / chrome insert) or the chromed metal part where the grip meets the horizontal rest part?

I think they are all slightly different. The upper end plastic part with the chrome insert is longer inthe E9, and the arm rest connects to it lower down. And, as I recall the chrome horizontal brace that attached the lower forward part of the armrest to the door is larger on the E9

Yep, the e12 plastic cap is narrower and closer to the door panel and the chrome piece is also smaller and more oval shaped. Scott’s pic is too short for a front door even if it is an e3 rear door armrest. Funny thing is the e3 rear door 3.0Si armrest cap looks identical to the front but isn’t and it is shared with my 69 2000 NK sedan, both closer to the door than the e9 cap.
