Respect Your Elders - BMW E3 Bavaria

wow truly great article..wish somehow i could meet owner Tim in Cali to say congrats and thank him for his e3 story and share my vintage bmws stories including my e3s but this article is just another reason why i am leaning toward keeping my 4 different e3s (69e3-2800 , 74e3Bavaria, 75e3-3.0si, 76e3-3.0si) and maybe not selling but finishing restoring my 2 remaining (69e3 and 74e3) that have been mechanically restored and rather very nice Drivers but their Body have not yet been addressed. But @starcruiser thank you for seeing this fcp article and posting on this e9 site. I think i maybe heading to next weekends bmwcca saratoga vintage in saratoga and with one of my e3s but sincere best wishes to all and your vintage car projects, especially if they bmws (wink & smile) thomas in westchester county ny

Is that really “cowhide” on the seats? Looks exactly like the stock vinyl (which mine has in that color). If it’s not the original, then surely some magic was done to match it. Or, perhaps by “cowhide” color they just mean the color? But it does say it was upgraded.

Maybe they kept the inserts and use leather on the trim? Anyone have a guess or knows?

The only time I find the word "cowhide" in the article is in this sentence...

"The rich cowhide color is such an awesome accent to that classic emerald green."

I'm pretty sure the author is referring to the color of the interior.

I've seen this car several times at the SoCal vintage BMW show in Woodley Park, Van Nuys and talked with Tim. The attention to detail is impressive; attached are my exterior shots from the 2023 show...

Just received a text from Tim. He is at SoCal Vintage today. His E3 is a very nice example with lots and lots of time and effort that has gone into it. The seats are vinyl, not real cowhide. They are a nice rich, warm color, and in great shape. I believe Tim won best E3 at SoCal Vintage before but I could be wrong. I'll have to ask him. Tim bought my old Schwarz E34 with a 5-speed and we realized that at a SoCal Vintage event a few years back. Great guy and big BMW enthusiast.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! I’ve had the car since 2009. It’s funny how things snuck into article such as the mention of the Nivomat rear suspension, which I don’t think Bavarias ever had. The seats are vinyl and the front seat material was sourced from World Upholstery, who had pre-sewn seat kits in the original color. I’ve done tons of refreshing and the biggest projects were the 10.5:1 b35 10yrs ago and installation of AC about 2 yrs ago. Here are a few more random pictures…
