Are there any markings on the upside down struts? My car came with a pair, they looked original but have no markings other than being "Bilstein Yellow" so I replaced them with standard Bilsteins but kept them. I called Bilstein to see about rebuilding them and they said they could find no records of such a shock. Perhaps with some identifiers, I can jar their memory.

I think you are confusing these with Bilstein HD’s. Bilstein HD’s are an inverted monotube strut insert. The strut is upside down and the bottom of the insert is where the piston screws into. The diameter of the visible piston (really the strut body) is 36mm.

The item for sale is a CSL/Alpina strut housing. It doesn’t accept inserts and there is no gland nut at all, just a dust cap (that kind of looks like a gland nut). The top of the housing is smooth - no internal threads. A 40mm monotube bilstein is inserted upside down. There are bushings added to the CSL body to allow the strut body to slide in and out. The piston screws directly into the bottom of the housing. There is no yellow piece if that makes sense.
