    Dolly Cart Restoration

How do you address the points at which the body "perches" on the dolly? I see holes through the subframe, for instance, that would make a good place to set a stud, so the body can't be shifted on the dolly without lifting it more than the length of the stud... Do you pad the perch points with...

    cluster

Looks real nice, very warm, very "wood" classic. Please provide some description of the wood work, veneer or solid, species, type of finish and how applied, and so on

    Engine Fire

Fire extinguishers have been the subject of significant discussion on this forum in years past. You can sit back and let others gather the information for you, or use the Search function. I've been close to several car fires. Cars (and bikes) burn quickly! I was able to put out two of those...

1973 BMW 3.0S on BaT Automatic

Y'all are very quick to condemn what you haven't seen in person (neither have I). From the BAT ad "The seller notes that the passenger-side front strut screws have been slotted and a steel plate is being used as a washer." There may/not be strut tower rust, we really don't know. It's odd...

I got my baby a new (old) steering wheel today!

I leather wrapped and stitched the stock wheel on my first 1970 2002a. Not with a fancy stitch, natural latigo leather color, some kinda woven fishing line, using a hammer and nail to poke the holes through which I ran the line. It's long, long gone, but it was fun and rewarding for a patient...

Turn signal cancel tab on the steering wheel hub

Isn't the cancel tab supposed to be opposite the little finger that pokes out of the turn signal apparatus, so you have to turn the wheel a certain amount for it to work? I've had trouble with mine... OTOH could you move the turn signal switch?

Thrust Bearing question 4 speed trans

The "Old Pro" taught me that the clutch release bearing can be taken apart using two opposed screwdrivers, and the grease cleaned. If the balls and race are not dimpled or scored, regrease, reassemble and on you go. On the other hand, you have to remove the trans to get at it, no small...

    3.0cs brake booster

my '69 2500 sedan had the greatest, lightest, smoothest brakes of any of the couple dozen older bimmers I've owned. It beat my wife's '73 Bavaria booster hands down, all my 2002s including '72 and '74 tii, 635CSi, 3.0CS, 2800Cs, all of them. All I can remember, nearly 40 year later, was that...

    rear view mirror

I've pulled my CS mirror on and off though not lately. I have an E12 mirror now, it's bigger and gives better situational awareness. They can be difficult to spring in and out. I found that making sure the spring loaded ball in the mirror mound actually slides back and forth like it's...

Is there a trick to getting the window switches to stay in place?

mmm, later style switches. IIRC with the earlier switches, the upper chromey bit latched onto the black rectangular housing below. You could pry them off and clean the switch innards, but risked breaking the little tabs that held them together. Once those tabs broke, your options narrowed...

    Valve adjustment

"there is no way to have the stems worn into the eccentrics" yes there is, the eccentrics do get worn, I had to replace them on two of my 2002s. Worn eccentrics make valve adjustment very difficult to get right. I had a lot of practice before I rotated the eccentric around to where I could...

I have what might be a full set of quite used chrome trims but shipping from Honolulu.... ah well.

    Windscreen fitting Problems

Okay, tip from long ago... Coupe bodies get some stiffening from the windshield (easy to imagine). If the wshield is out and the car improperly supported, or was tweaked through stress, age or accident, removing the wshield releases those stresses and the body sags, making refitting difficult...

Miss E9 gets her day out

Is it me, the lighting, or has the car THREE shades of silver and gray? Me likey!

Deposit on another BMW - NOT an E9

With, for the USA anyway, the later style aluminium ('73 and '74) intake tubes. Only the '72 USA had the plastic tubes, I've had both.

Getting a sunroof and wiper motor rebuilt rather than replacing?

Re the wiper motor, if you remove it and bench test it you'll find out whether any problem might lie with the motor, or the "transmission" which has something like a 47:1 reduction ratio. I've had 'em apart, it's not hard if you are cleaning, regreasing and reinstalling. Odd failure: wife's...

    Valve adjustment

I've used a 1/2" ratchet and whatever large socket (30? 36 mm?) fits the crank nut. It's a close fit; beware slipping and running something into the radiator. Will really un-make your day. Fun fact: the nut on the front of the crankshaft that holds the pulley on is called the "Jesus nut" b/c...

    Brake fluid reservoir float?

When I swapped in the 5-speed that replaced the 4-speed that replaced the auto trans, I found I'd used a 2002 part from my stash. Different: works.

    Transmission query

I drove a new BMWNA 1995 540i six-speed in Colorado at 115 in fourth gear thinking... "there are two more gears, what in this world do I need those for?" Well I might have, can't commit to actually saying such a thing, must have been delirious, bamboozled, wack outa ma haed, er sumpin'. Don't...
